After a week of rumors, WWE confirmed that NXT Superstar Matt Riddle would be getting the call to Smackdown. The former UFC fighter did not have the NXT run many fans were expecting when he signed with WWE in 2018. However, Riddle was consistently a fan favorite on the black and yellow brand, reaching his peak with an NXT Tag Team Championship run alongside Pete Dunne.WWE seems to be putting a lot behind Riddle's introduction to Smackdown, seemingly pairing him with Hall of Famer Kurt Angle to give him immediate credibility. While it's not been confirmed that Angle will be Riddle's full-time manager, the company has paired the two together in recent weeks. First Angle served as the special guest referee in Riddle's final NXT match, followed by having the Olympian announce Riddle's arrival to Smackdown. While it's no guarantee an association with Angle will help Riddle succeed on the main roster, it would give him an advantage over past NXT call-ups who have floundered away from Full Sail.Related: WWE: A Controversial NXT Star Is Reportedly Set to Make His Smackdown Debut

Many NXT fan favorites have drowned once called up to the main roster. Ricochet, Sami Zayn, Neville, The Revival, American Alpha, and Bo Dallas are some of the biggest names to leave NXT and struggle on the main roster. Even an immensely over talent like Finn Balor was misused on the main roster to the point where he is now back on NXT, having a mid-card feud with Damien Priest. Apollo Crews was well on his way to being a failed project before Paul Heyman gave him a shot with the United States Championship last week on Raw.

In Riddle, WWE has an excellent in-ring talent that can provide physical, engaging matches with most of Smackdown's current roster.   However, past NXT call ups have given fans plenty of reasons to be worried about Riddle's future on Friday nights.

As is, Riddle's aloof character could be the biggest thing working against him. His "Bro" catchphrase could end up being overused, turning him into a one-dimensional surfer dude, instead of the experienced, dangerous fighter he can be. Even in NXT, Riddle's insistence on playing the "Newly-Bros" game with Timothy Thatcher was one of the factors that led to their breakup. If WWE is not careful, it could turn Riddle, a legitimate fighter and fan favorite, into a one-note comedy act.

For Riddle to have a successful main-roster career, WWE needs to put its full support behind the 34-year old right out of the gate. The Smackdown roster is loaded with talent, and Riddle will be able to showcase his skills against Jeff Hardy, Sheamus, Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura, Daniel Bryan, A.J. Styles, and Chad Gable.

While many fans are clamoring for a grudge match between Riddle and Goldberg, WWE would be smarter to establish its new star away from the recently tarnished reputation of the former WCW Champion. Bruce Prichard being a fan of Riddle is a good sign that The Orginal Bro will be used well right away.

King Corbin would make for an excellent first feud for Riddle to establish himself as a threat. The two already have history, as Corbin eliminated Riddle from both the Royal Rumble and Survivor Series matches. Corbin is one of the brand's most detested heels, and a quick, physical feud would set Riddle on the title path.

If WWE wanted to throw its full support behind Riddle, it could have The Original Bro challenge the winner of the Intercontinental Championship Tournament between Bryan and Styles. It would quickly put Riddle in the upper-echelon and give WWE another new mid-card star to compliment Crews on Raw.

Another option would be re-uniting him with Broserweights teammate Dunne once travel restrictions are lifted. The pair would add another excellent face team to feud with Miz and Morrison and The Forgotten Sons for the Smackdown Tag Team Titles.

While an immediate title feud may be wishful thinking, WWE needs to capitalize on the hype surrounding Riddle following his brutal "Fight Pit" match with Thatcher. His MMA pedigree and connection to Angle give him a small head start, but WWE needs to prove it can maintain his momentum and finally capitalize on a hot NXT talent.
