John Cena faced what may have been his ultimate defeat at WrestleMania 36, when he was broken down psychologically by Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Fun House match before being finished off by "the Fiend."

His loss to Wyatt was jarring to long time fans because Cena's entire career has been defined by hisovercoming any obstacle. More than any other WWE Champion since the glory days of Hulk Hogan, Cena was defined by winning against all odds. Fans became so annoyed with it during his nine year run as a main eventer that it even became an internet meme: Cena Wins LOL!

Cena's rare losses were the exception that proved the rule during his years at the top. Of the handful of losses he suffered during that time, some were more memorable than others. These are the top five losses in Cena's career:

vs. Rob Van Dam, ECW One Night Stand 2006

Cena faced many harsh crowds in his career, but he never performed in front of one as harsh as the one he faced at the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view. The show, which relaunched ECW as a third WWE brand, took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in front of 2,460 fans. They were all united in their hatred of Cena and love of ECW Original Rob Van Dam, who was challenging for the WWE Championship. With an assist from Edge, Van Dam defeated Cena to win his first (and only) WWE Championship, making WWE's top champion part of its outsider brand. For one night, ECW was not only alive again, but on top of the sports entertainment mountain.

vs. CM Punk, Money in the Bank 2011

This match was the ultimate battle between the fans who were happy with the status quo and the fans who wanted WWE to change for the better. Punk, coming off his incendiary "pipe bomb promo" and wrestling in his home town, was trying to leave the company (in storyline, at this point) as WWE Champion. Cena was, even more so than usual, representing everything passionate fans resented about WWE.

The atmosphere was electric and the match more than delivered. It was the first WWE match to receive 5 stars from Dave Meltzer in over a decade. The finish saw Cena, determined to beat Punk clean, stop Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis from ringing the bell early in a callback to the infamous Montreal Screwjob. Cena's integrity ended up costing him, as Punk went on to hit him with his finishing move, the GTS, and win the title. Punk struck a huge blow against WWE's stagnation, at Cena's expense.

vs. The Rock, WrestleMania 28

After calling the Rock out for years in the press and spending a year verbally sparring with him on WWE TV, Cena finally got the Rock in the ring at WrestleMania 28. Like the Punk match, it was in his rival's hometown, but unlike that match, this one was personal. Cena had been dying to prove himself, a man who lived and died for WWE, to be better than someone who he believed abandoned the company for Hollywood stardom (a path Cena now is in the process of following).

Cena almost had him, too. After having his top rope body press countered into an Attitude Adjustment, the Rock was reeling. Unfortunately for Cena, he got too cute for his own good and went for a People's Elbow, which the Rock countered into a Rock Bottom for the win. Cena would have to wait a year to get his rematch with the Rock, ultimately regaining the WWE Championship in the process.

Brock Lesnar, SummerSlam 2014

The closest that WWE has ever come to the Death of Superman, this match marked the end of Cena's run as the top star in WWE. It wasn't so much a passing of the torch, like Cena would do for Roman Reigns and A.J. Styles, but more of a mugging. Lesnar suplexed Cena out of the main event and installed himself as the new king of the mountain, signaling a shift away from workhorses like Cena to part timers as the promotion's biggest stars.

vs. the Undertaker, WrestleMania 28

In what might turn out to be Cena's final in ring match in front of a packed crowd at WrestleMania (whatever else you can say about the Firefly Fun House match, it was neither of those things), Cena was defeated by the Dead Man in 2:45. There's no shame in losing to the Undertaker at WrestleMania, but being squashed by an aging Phenom, after Cena goaded him into coming out of what looked like retirement, was a clear sign that the unbeatable Cena of old was dead and buried. Wyatt put the finishing touches on Cena's reputation at WrestleMania 36, making it unlikely we'll ever hear "Cena wins LOL" again.
