WWE will be teaming up with Crunchyroll for a brand new anime series.

The news comes in the aftermath of a call amongst company investors, and it's unclear if the anime will be completely original or if it will draw upon the incredible library of WWE characters at the company's disposal.

There is a well-known relationship between wrestling and anime, and many WWE Superstars are known anime enthusiasts themselves, including New Day members Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, as well as AJ Styles and Asuka.

Recently, WWE announced a partnership with Peacock that saw the world's largest wrestling promotion bring its vast library of content over to the young streaming platform. This partnership also brought about the end of WWE Network in the United States, though the service is still available internationally. This partnership with Peacock has helped grow WWE's media presence and earned the company a net $43.8 million in income in Q1. Additionally, A&E recently began a WWE-themed run of its hit Biography program, with episodes centered on "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, to name a few. The company also launched a new series called WWE's Most Wanted Treasures, hosted by WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley, and the company is currently working on a collaboration with G4 to host a video game competition series with Xavier Woods. Woods will be one of the premier hosts for the resurrected G4 brand after an extensive social media campaign.

This is not the only wrestling animated production on the slate. Last fall, WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio shared a short teaser trailer for an animated series based on his Lucha libre-themed exploits. That series is set to air on Cartoon Network. Beyond that, WWE Studios has produced several straight-to-DVD animated releases, including WWE crossovers with the Flintstones, Scooby-Doo and the DreamWorks film Surf's Up.

WWE currently airs Raw, SmackDown, NXT and NXT UK weekly. It recently hosted WrestleMania 37 in front of a live audience and will be airing WrestleMania Backlash on May 16, live on Peacock and WWE Network.
