WWE 2K22 will reportedly be the first WWE video game in 15 years to feature the fan-favorite General Manager Mode.

According to Michael Straw of Sports Gamers Online, GM Mode is slated to make its long-awaited return in WWE 2K22, which is scheduled to release early next year. Apparently, with the WWE 2K series taking a year off in 2020, the development team was afforded the opportunity to bring the beloved game mode back into the fold. "It was a top priority," one source allegedly told Straw. "The fans clearly wanted it, and the team knew that they add the ammo to get it approved and in."

GM Mode was originally introduced in 2005's WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006. It allowed players to act as the General Manager of either Raw or SmackDown, managing wrestlers, booking matches, establishing rivalries and generally trying to make your show the more popular of the two among WWE fans.

GM Mode returned in 2006's WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 and 2007's WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008. In SvR 2008, GM Mode was merged with Season Mode to create WWE 24/7 Mode. In addition to Raw and SmackDown, SvR 2008's GM Mode also allowed players to choose to be the General Manger of ECW.

GM Mode did not return in 2008's WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 and has been absent for the series ever since. WWE Universe, a fantasy booking game mode that acts as something of a spiritual successor to GM Mode, was introduced in 2010's WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 and has since become a franchise mainstay. Nevertheless, many fans have voiced their desire to see GM Mode make a return -- and it looks like they're finally getting their wish.

Developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports, WWE 2k22 is slated for release in March 2022 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
