Fans of video game grappling action may not be able to enjoy their WWE 2K fix this year, as WWE 2K21 has reportedly been canceled.
According to Justin Leeper, who has worked on a series of WWE games as a narrative leader, including the "Road to WrestleMania" series, WWE 2K21 will not release this year. However, Leeper says his sources informed him that there are plans for a "different kind of WWE game from a different kind of game developer."
Given the poor critical reception of WWE 2K20 received, 2K appears to be taking the negative feedback seriously. The game currently sits at 43 on Metacritic, with a user score of 1.4.
It’s worth noting that WWE usually reveals information regarding new games around the time of the biggest yearly event, WrestleMania. However, the promotion has yet to share any updates. Moreover, around this time of year, 2K would typically begin motion capture work with Superstars for the updated game, but there has been no news regarding this process either.
It's unknown at this time whether 2K's apparent decision to forego WWE 2K21 is the result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
