While it is an enjoyable superhero film, 2017's Justice League still wound up a critical and commercial failure, with criticisms aimed towards such elements as the movie's antagonist and story. However, Wonder Woman 1984 star Connie Nielsen -- who played Wonder Woman's mother Queen Hippolyta in both Justice League and the Wonder Woman films -- offered her own insight into the failure of the former movie.

"What was really sad was how much stuff we filmed that wasn’t in the film," Nielsen told THR. "And I think that’s part of what made Justice League (2017) less cohesive as a viewing experience. The intent was not the same during the editing as it was during shooting."

While Justice League was originally directed by Zack Snyder, he stepped down following his daughter's suicide. Joss Whedon would go on to helm the rest of the post-production work on the project, as well as extensive reshoots that altered the tone Snyder established for the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder's initial vision for Justice League will be featured in the upcoming Snyder Cut on HBO Max.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes - Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash - it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Zack Snyder's Justice League will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2021.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film is currently in theaters and on HBO Max.
