Throughout the previews for Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, there has been a focus on Jabba Desilijic Tiure, more commonly known as Jabba the Hutt, and the power vacuum left behind in his wake. While there are many factions vying for power on Tatooine, a more serious rival for control of Jabba's criminal empire may come from off-world. Boba Fett may still have to contend with members of Jabba’s family and the Hutt Cartel as he tries to remain in control of Jabba’s former empire.

In both the current canon and Legends canon, multiple members of Jabba's family have been introduced. By examining each of Jabba's canonical relatives and in some cases their Legends canon counterparts, fans can see which family members are most likely to make an appearance in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.

Jabba's Son Could Be His True Heir

Rotta-the-hutt

First introduced in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie, Rotta the Huttlet is Jabba's son. In the film, Rotta was kidnapped in a plot orchestrated by his uncle Ziro, but Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano saved him. While Rotta was mentioned at various points in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, his fate after his father's death is unknown; however, he most likely would be Jabba's official heir.

In many ways, Rotta was the precursor to Grogu in the Star Wars franchise. Like Grogu, Rotta was the cute "baby" version of an already established character, and he also became a sidekick of sorts to his rescuers. Also, like Grogu, the life cycle of Hutts is not entirely clear in the current canon, but Jabba himself was hundreds of years old by the time of the Skywalker Saga. Therefore, Rotta could still be a child even though decades have passed since his first appearance. Thus, Rotta is not the most likely rival to Boba for Jabba's empire, but he still could make a cameo in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.

Gorga Could Represent the Hutt Cartel's Interest

Gorga the Hutt in Star Wars the Clone Wars

In the current canon, Gorga Desilijic Tiure is Jabba's nephew and does accounting as part of the Hutt Council. While he does appear in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he mainly is seen as a silent party in the Hutt Council's meetings. However, in Star Wars: Legends canon, Gorga actually has connections to Boba. Gorga was first introduced in the comic Boba Fett: Bounty on Bar-Kooda by John Wagner, Cam Kennedy and Bob Pinaha. In the comic, Zorba hired Boba to defeat the pirate Bar-Kooda so that Gorga could convince Orko the H'uun to approve of Gorga's romance with Orko's daughter, Anarcho. After Boba successfully captured Bar-Kooda, Gorga had his chefs cook Bar-Kooda and served him to Orko for dinner. This particularly gruesome move shows that Gorga was ruthless when he deemed it necessary.

While Gorga took over Jabba's Empire in Star Wars: Legends canon, his status in the new canon is unknown. Since Bib Fortuna was shown to be the head of Jabba's former empire in Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Gorga and the rest of the Hutts may have been driven out of power on Tatooine. However, Gorga's Legends past could make him the most likely Hutt to be a formidable rival to Boba for Jabba's empire in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.

Jabba's Grandmother Could Still Hold Some Sway

Mama the Hutt in Star Wars the Clone Wars

Jabba's grandmother, Mama, was first introduced in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode "Hunt for Ziro." Ziro, Jabba's uncle who was on the run from the Hutt Council, went to his mother because he did not think that Gardulla the Hutt would look for him there. Mama reluctantly agreed to let Ziro use her space ship, but she also showed that she did not have any particular loyalty toward him when she told both Cad Bane and the Jedi searching for Ziro where Ziro had gone. Mama's feelings about her grandson Jabba are unknown, but she could possibly want a stake in his former empire. Still, because she does not seem to be too involved in Hutt politics, Mama is one of the less likely members of Jabba's family to make an appearance in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.

Jabba's Father Is Not Currently Canon But Could Still Seek Vengeance

Han Solo, Trioculus and Zorba the Hutt on the cover of Star Wars Zorba the Hutt's Revenge. Han has his gun raised, and Trioculus and Zorba seem allied together.

In the current canon, Jabba does have a father, but he is currently unnamed and has not been featured. However, in Star Wars: Legends, Zorba the Hutt was one of three antagonist factions in Paul Davids and Hollace Davids's middle-grade series, most commonly known as the Jedi Prince series. Zorba sought vengeance for Jabba's death against Leia Organa in particular. In any other series, Zorba would have been the most over the top villain; however, in the Jedi Prince series, Zorba is actually the most grounded antagonist in comparison to Trioculus' exaggerated evil and the Prophets of the Dark Side's constant insertion of "dark" as a modifier to common sayings to emphasize their evil.

While Zorba was driven in part by greed, his main motivation for his actions was his grief over the loss of his son. Thus, if Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett chooses to include Jabba's family, Zorba could also reprise his Legends canon role and continue his quest for vengeance and his own piece of Jabba's empire.

To see if Jabba's family plays a role in the future, The Book of Boba Fett starts streaming December 29 on Disney+.
