World Trigger is renowned for having extremely meticulous set-ups and world-building, especially in terms of power scaling. Characters are ranked according to their fighting abilities using an unambiguous set of criteria. However, it is also a series that is not all about stats, but rather tactics and strategies. Thus ranking the strongest character is not as simple as one would imagine. Here is an attempt at finding out who is the current strongest character using the information available so far.

The most straightforward place to start is with the official databook called Border Briefing File where there are very clear stats listed for almost every major character in the series. The core stats for fighters include Trion level, attack, defense/support, mobility, skill, range, commend (meaning leadership), and special tactics. Most of these categories are carefully scored, for example, Chika Amatori is known to have an incredible amount of Trion, and sure enough, her Trion score is listed as 38, whereas someone with pretty good levels like Kuga Yuma is scored at 7. But even creator Daisuke Ashihara has stated that stats should not be the end all be all for judging the outcome of a fight, as he has repeatedly shown throughout the series.

Jin Yuichi is The Most Well-Rounded Choice

World Trigger Ep 14 Jin and Black Trigger

In addition to stats, we also have to consider tactical abilities, and on this front, Jin is probably one of the strongest in all of Border. This is not only because of the powerful side effect that allows him to see the future but also because he is an extremely clever and skillful fighter. This is best demonstrated in his fight against Hyuse during the Aftokrator Invasion. His use of Escudo, the giant defense shields to trap Hyuse in between was ingenious. He also had the intelligence to create a brand new weapon just to defeat Kei Tachikawa, the No.1 Attacker. And when Jin wielded his Black Trigger Fujin, he is almost unstoppable.

But it is very important to stress that official stats are only based on the use of normal triggers because Black Trigger holders get a huge power boost. As we’ve seen in the Black Trigger Capture Arc, where Jin faced off with not only Tachikawa, but the No.2 Attacker Kazama and both of their Squads at the same time, and managed to take out everyone. Judging by this fight alone, Jin should clearly be the strongest fighter. That said, during normal one on one fights, he often loses to Tachikawa. Because Jin no longer has the Black Trigger, his power is considerably weakened as a result, and can no longer realistically contend with Black Trigger users.

Tsukihiko Amou with Black Trigger Wins Out

World Trigger Ep 25 Tsukihiko Amou

But does this mean that Tachikawa is the strongest fighter? Not necessarily, as he is not as skilled as his mentor Shinoda, who is regarded as the strongest Normal Trigger user in HQ. He is strategic to a degree but he is clearly not as good as Jin as demonstrated by the Black Trigger Capture Arc. Additionally, both he and Shinoda have lost to Black Trigger users in the series, which means that someone with a Black Trigger is still superior to Normal Trigger users, so we have to look among them.

If we consider only Border agents with a Black Trigger, currently, the strongest is most definitely Tsukihiko Amou. During the Aftokrator Invasion Arc, he was able to defend two entire areas of the city by himself (though also leveling them in the process), yet he was still bored because his enemies “are all small fries”. But we’ve clearly seen the same type of Trion soldiers from Aftokrator giving other A Rankers like Kitora an incredibly hard time.

Even without the Black Trigger, Amou is still a great all-rounder with very respectable stats. Though he is probably not as strong as Tachikawa in one-on-one combat. Amou's fighting style remains one of the biggest mysteries in World Trigger, it is said that the way he fights doesn’t look human, and he is kept away from regular citizens so as to not frighten them. If and when Ashihara finally decides to show it in the series, it will surely be a sight to behold.

Aftokrator's Viza Is the Strongest Enemy

World Trigger ep 34 Viza

Since there are only 3 Black Triggers in Border; Yuma’s ring from his father, Fujin which currently has no owner, and Tsukihiko Amou’s Trigger, there are not many to choose from. However, there are plenty of Black Trigger users from Aftokrator, and all of them seem powerful enough to go up against Border agents, even Shinoda. According to Aftokrator soldiers, Viza is using the national treasure Trigger of Aftokrator, and he has the power to match it. So he is probably one of the strongest if not the strongest person in all of World Trigger, and his stats certainly confirm this fact. Although he was defeated by Kuga Yuma during the invasion, which is a wonderful demonstration of World Trigger’s message of tactics over raw power.

But where does this leave Yuma? He is definitely among the Top 10 strongest characters, but currently, there is one major weakness to Yuma that needs to be addressed: his trusted AI companion Replica, who was instrumental in Yuma's efficient use of the Black Trigger, is no longer with him. Without Replica, Yuma is very likely weakened. This makes the quest to find Replica all the more important in the upcoming Away Arc.
