The tale of Superman's home planet will soon receive a modern update in World of Krypton, a new six-issue mini-series debuting in December.

Written by Robert Venditti (Green Lantern, The Surrogates) and illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming (Powers), World of Krypton stars the birth father of the Man of Steel -- Jor-El, head of the Kryptonian Science Council. As all signs point to a catastrophic event that will consume the planet and cause a mass extinction, Joe-El embarks on a mission to save his planet that is doomed to fail, if current Superman mythology is any indication.

According to DC, World of Krypton "combines action, cosmic wonder, and political intrigue in a story as much about our world as the one on the page." The series will also highlight several key characters in Kryptonian lore, including General Zod, a very young Kara Zor-El -- the cousin of Superman and future Supergirl -- and even a puppy version of Krypto the Superdog.

Venditti and Oeming's take on Superman's home world follows in the footsteps of other classic books to bear the World of Krypton title. These include a 1979 Bronze Age mini-series, written by Paul Kupperberg and penciled by Howard Chaykin, and another 1987 mini-series written by John Bryne and illustrated by Mike Mignola that updated the depiction of Krypton in the aftermath of DC's mid-'80s reboot, Crisis on Infinite Earths.

World of Krypton #1 goes on sale Dec. 7 from DC.
