World of Darkness and Paradox Interactive have released The Orpheus Device, a free audio game with accessibility features based on the TTRPG Wraith: The Oblivion.

The Orpheus Device is directly accessible through Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant and the Earplay iOS App and designed to be entirely controlled through voice commands. The game puts the player into the headset of an investigator using a machine that can communicate with the spirits of the deceased as they delve into the tragic case of the Marten family. The Orpheus Device was created by are Richard Dansky, the original creator of World of Darkness' TTRPG Wraith: The Oblivion, and Dave Grossman (Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Fables, The Walking Dead, Mr. Robot).

In Wraith: The Oblivion, players take on the role of a recently departed spirit (the "wraith") trying to close the unresolved issues that prevented them from ascending to the next level of existence. Their biggest hurdle is their Shadow, the dark part of themselves that encouraged them to give in and remain attached to the material world forever and ever.

It's unclear whether the player is a ghost like the Martens or part of Orpheus Group personnel, normal humans that underwent near-death experiences and are now able to communicate with the dead and enter the spirit realm. Orpheus Group was a central element of the limited-run tie-in TTRPG Orpheus, which skirted around most of the rest of the World of Darkness to focus on its shared story with Wraith: The Oblivion.

Playing The Orpheus Device on iOS requires the Earplay App; it will automatically appear on Earplay's stories library. The Orpheus Device can be played on Android either by directly addressing Google Assistant with the voice command "Talk to The Orpheus Device" (although the data won't be saved unless players are talking to a device like Google Home, mini, Hub or Hub Max) or by downloading the Alexa App for Android, pressing the Alexa button and saying "Start The Orpheus Device."
