No one has popped up more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four than Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth-616. While each movie has mostly been a one-shot affair with little tying the different installments together, Wong has been there to keep things moving cohesively.

One complaint from fans is that the movies are not connecting like they used to. This is not a bad thing since having separate stories for each hero allows the MCU to explore different themes and plot structures and not be so predictable. However, if fans want to see something that proves the MCU is leading to something big, look no further than Wong as the new Nick Fury.

Wong Is Setting Something up in the MCU

The one thing that really tied things together and built up to the Avengers movies in the first MCU phase was Nick Fury. He showed up in the post-credits scene of Iron Man and mentioned the Avengers Initiative, then played a key role in the second movie, bringing in the Black Widow. Fury was back again in the post-credits scene of Thor and at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. It was Fury who brought together the Avengers for their first major battle, and this was all set up with the smaller appearances leading up to the movie.

Wong appears to be doing something similar but on a smaller scale. Unlike Fury, Wong has never mentioned putting together a team, but there is an Avengers team coming in Phase Six. From the sound of it, Wong is working on that in Phase Four, and Phase Five might see the team form. He first appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where he showed an interest in Shang-Chi's rings while also revealing he was working with Captain Marvel and Hulk. Earlier in the movie, he was with Abomination in an underground fight club. Based on the trailers, how Wong and Abomination ended up together might play out in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

What Team Is Wong Forming?

It is unclear what Wong is working on in the MCU, but he has a lot on his plate. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he was fighting side-by-side with Strange to protect the world, and it was clear he was setting up a major force to battle something in Kamar-Taj. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Wong said that he was busy and had a lot going on. Much of that was clearly shown in the Shang-Chi post-credit scenes. He is working hand-in-hand with what is left of the Avengers and is busy making sure they are prepared if and when something else happens. This will obviously come with the Secret Invasion, the battle with Kang, and the upcoming Secret Wars.

Clearly, one of Wong's main recruits was Abomination. In the She-Hulk trailer, he shows up to ask Jennifer Walters for some help. Since she is representing Abomination, and Wong was already shown working with the gamma-mutate, Emil Blonsky is one of the Sorcerer Supreme's allies. Wong was also shown working with Hulk, and while that might be a conflict of interest, he said in the She-Hulk trailer that he answers to a higher power and the universe is in danger. With the incursions happening, Wong is one of the few beings who know how to deal with them. Much like Nick Fury set up his team to battle world-ending threats, it is now Wong's turn to take on that role, and while not explicitly stated, his actions across Phase Four of the MCU show that he is the new Nick Fury of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
