ABC is developing a reboot of The Wonder Years, which will focus on a 1960's Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama.

According to Variety, Lee Daniels (EmpireStar) will executive produce alongside Marc Velez. Saladin K. Patterson will write and also executive produce the series. Original series star Fred Savage, who played Kevin Arnold, will return to direct the pilot. This new reboot of The Wonder Years is set in the same time period as the original ABC series, which took place between 1968 and 1973 and ran for six seasons from 1988 to 1993.

ABC's original Wonder Years starred Ben Savage as Kevin Arnold, with audiences tuning in every week to watch him grow up around his family members: father Jack Arnold (Dan Lauria), mother Norma Arnold (Alley Mills), sister Karen Arnold (Olivia d'Abo), and brother Wayne Arnold (Jason Hervey). Other supporting characters include best friend Paul Joshua Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano) and Kevin's crush and next-door neighbor Gwendolyn "Winnie" Cooper ((Danica McKellar). An adult Kevin was voiced by Daniel Stern, who narrated each episode.

Daniels' television work consists of hits Empire and Star for Fox. On the feature film front, Daniels landed two Oscar nominations for Precious.
