If there was ever a wake-up call for the comic book movie landscape, it was 2017’s Wonder Woman. With the character first appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Diana Prince moved into her own solo movie a year later and the DCU has never been the same since. To put it bluntly, Wonder Woman gave people faith that Warner Brothers could make a decent DC movie, and arguably reinvigorated the shared DC universe. Even without the weight of a multi-million dollar franchise on its shoulders, Wonder Woman was a movie with the odds stacked against it.

Female-led superhero movies have never been given the appropriate treatment, leading to the belief that they’re not worth investing in (Marvel are yet to produce a solo female-led title, Captain Marvel is due for release March 2019). Despite all the odds, Director Patty Jenkins, lead star Gal Gadot and a talented cast and crew ensured that Wonder Woman has become the fifth biggest superhero movie of all time. With fame and universal acclaim comes the infamy of an internet full of memes. With that in mind, CBR has trawled through the web to find you the best, the funniest, the 15 Wonder Woman Memes That Speak The Truth!

15 JETSETTER

It’s pretty funny that we’ve waited for years for a Wonder Woman movie, and on the same year it comes out, Spider-Man: Homecoming beats them to it when it comes to Diana’s classic invisible jet. The familiar aspect of Wonder Woman’s history lives more in fans' memories than it actually appears in modern comics, but many fans were eager to see it referenced or represented in some sense.

Instead, The Vulture, of all people, is the comic book character that gets his own invisible jet. Sure, he stole it from S.H.I.E.L.D but for a short while he “owned” it. It makes sense that Diana’s jet didn’t appear in the movie, it’s an aspect of her comics history that’s hard to marry up with more modern interpretations, but still: we want that jet.

14 STEVES

We’re sure it’s a coincidence, right? Still, maybe just to play it safe, all actors called Chris should stay away from roles playing a guy named Steve. Chris Evans did it first in Captain America: The First Avenger, then Chris Pine followed suit as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman. Two instances hardly constitute a terrifying new trend to be worried about but hey, it’s a hell of a coincidence.

The circumstances of their situations were slightly different of course, but both were heroically brought down during a war while trying to save the lives of others, but while Steve Trevor landed on the mythical island of Themyscira, Steve Rogers wasn’t so lucky: plunging into the ice at the end of First Avenger, he was a “Capsicle” until his defrosting in modern times, leading to him joining the rest of the Marvel super gang in 2012’s Avengers.

13 HOPEFUL VS EXHAUSTED

It seems a little unfair to compare Jessica Jones with Diana Prince, as one is an Amazon Goddess and the other is a super-powered private detective, but you’ve got to laugh at the stark difference in their world views. Maybe it’s because of the life that Jess has had compared to Diana, but either way, they could not be further apart on their views on humanity.

In all fairness, Jessica lives her life experiencing the worst that humanity has to offer: whether it’s dealing with scumbags, crooks, and cheaters as part of her job as a private investigator for Alias Investigations, or escaping the predatory clutches of the Purple Man, she’s exposed to some real trash. Diana, on the other hand, is yet to see the kind of scum that Jessica takes in her stride.

12 PROPER INTRODUCTIONS

If there was one thing that Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming shared, it was the collective sense of cautious optimism. Up until now, the DCU hasn’t got a great track record for producing quality movies. Both Man of Steel and Suicide Squad weren’t very well received by fans, and the less said about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the better.

Similarly, although Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 is still considered one of the best superhero movies of all time, the rest of Spidey’s big screen output has been...troublesome. It’s understandable then that as fans moved closer to the release of these two movies, we tried to keep our expectations low, despite scene-stealing cameos by both characters on their first appearance. We needn’t have worried because both Wonder Woman and Homecoming were great.

11 POSERS

It’s safe to say that Wonder Woman subverted a lot of the usual stereotypes when it comes to female superheroes, and rightly so: if the biggest, most prominent female DC hero can’t get the respect that all female characters deserve, then there’s no hope for anyone.

Despite this, the three examples above are from projects in the last few years: Gamora (Zoe Saldana) from Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) from what looks like her first appearance in Iron Man 2, and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) from The Defenders poster. All three characters are more than just a pretty face (or other parts, if these examples are anything to go by), and all deserve to have posters where they’re doing something as awesome as lifting a tank over their heads. Sure, Black Widow couldn’t physically do that, but you get what we mean.

10 ELEVATION

We all know that Batman could easily get to the top floor of this building if he wanted to. He practically lives on the rooftops of Gotham, and not being able to fly hasn’t stopped him from getting up to the Bat-signal on top of the GCPD building for the latest midnight briefing with Commissioner Gordon.

The only possible reason this scenario would present itself was if Batman was pranking his super friends, so that’s the theory we’re going with. He’s so sick of them offering to pick him up when they want to fly to places that he’s forced them to live life in the slow lane, getting an elevator with him in a way that even he never does. That or it’s a fun picture of some cosplayers striking a pose, we may never know!

9 THE FLOOR IS LAVA

When you were a kid this was a fun game, hopping from couch to chair to side table in an effort to not get your feet burnt horribly by imaginary lava. Earlier this year, it was fun all over again, as viral videos popped up all over the web of adults and kids alike playing the game in the strangest of places, from supermarkets to parks.

With Diana being as agile as any highly trained warrior, she’d be great playing The Floor is Lava, even in the molten hellscape she found herself in near the end of the movie. Despite that, the fact that she refuses to care about the lava all around her is a testament to how much she kicks ass, both as a superhero and a professional level cheater at The Floor is Lava.

8 2 DAWN 2 JUSTICE

Is there a more inconsistent naming convention for a movie series than in the Fast and the Furious franchise? It started off fairly innocuously, with the fun use of the number 2 to separate the sequel from its predecessor, and sure Tokyo Drift is an awesome (albeit silly) addition. Just changing the name to Fast and Furious though? The fourth movie is where all ideas of sane franchise titles went out the window.

What better way to highlight that silliness than to add the rules to other movie franchises, like Wonder Woman. We can only hope we’ll get six sequels, especially if they’re as good as the original. Still, calling them names like Wonder & Women, Wonder Woman: Themyscira Drift, and ending with 7 Women would be a bit of a stretch.

7 HOLDING THE LINE

It’s no secret that Wonder Woman has been a revelation to the DC movie universe. After the false start that was 2011’s Green Lantern, the current shared universe kicked off with Man of Steel in 2013 and continued with Batman v Superman three years later. It’s safe to say that neither of those movies was particularly beloved by fans, so much so that people were cautious that the entire concept of a Justice League movie was a bad idea. Then, Wonder Woman changed the game.

Against the odds, Patty Jenkins and the team proved that not only could a good DC movie be made, but that it could be done with a prominent female cast showing the men how it’s done. Gal Gadot was the best part of BvS, which was a great start, and now, thanks to Wonder Woman, people are more than just cautiously optimistic about Justice League.

6 ASPIRATIONS

“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have” is all well and good, but what if the job you want has a wildly inappropriate dress code for the job you have? Well, if this gag is anything to go by, you roll with it and face the consequences with Human Resources.

It’s further complicated when the job you want is that of the Themysciran Goddess and protector of mankind Wonder Woman, as the usual outfit she wears to attend her day job (if you wish to call it that) does not at all suit the role of a standard office worker. You know what, though, maybe it’s the managers at your office that are wrong! You wear whatever you want to work, and let Sandra in HR suffer the consequences. Just, you know, don’t tell them we told you to do it.

5 PROVING THEM WRONG

There were many haters when a Wonder Woman movie was announced. Sure there were the usual misogynistic trolls who run in fear of a powerful character like Diana, but hardcore fans of Wonder Woman were cautious too. After all, up until the movie’s release, the DCU didn't have the best track record, and fans of the Themysciran warrior had already seen their colleagues in the Batman and Superman camps disappointed by their big screen outings.

As we all know by now, we needn’t have worried, as Wonder Woman smashed through the box office to become the fourth biggest superhero movie of all time. Those fans that never doubted the success for a moment are sitting pretty now, and the rest of us are breathing a sigh of relief that Diana got the movie that she deserved.

4 ASK HER!

At this point, Wonder Woman has knocked it out of the park in every big screen outing she’s had. Her cameo in Batman v Superman stole the show and her solo movie was the best DCU movie to date. We can only hope that it’s not just a trait of the character but a sign of the changing fortunes of the entire franchise, which has finally found its stride.

If this meme is anything to go by, though, it doesn’t look like Superman or Batman are taking any chances. Their track record so far is less than stellar, so it’s unsurprising that they’d try and catch a ride on the hottest ticket around. If the trailers are to be believed, Justice League looks to be following in the footsteps of Wonder Woman, so here’s hoping the characters all get the big screen outings worthy of their legacy.

3 FACEPUNCH

Thanks to writer Gail Simone, we were treated to this Themysciran saying that elegantly sums up everything about Wonder Woman: “Don’t kill if you can wound, don’t wound if you can subdue, don’t subdue if you can pacify, and don’t raise your hand at all until you’ve first extended it”.

As a mantra, it’s pretty brilliant. As an encapsulation of everything that makes Diana such a unique character, it’s perfect. Wonder Woman works best when she’s a hopeful character, working for peace for all mankind. When push comes to shove though, we all know she can defend herself, which is why this meme works so well. It’s not her first choice, but if provoked she can and will punch you in the face. As such, the mantra in this meme sits side by side with the one above, proving that there’s nothing Diana can’t achieve.

2 NEW TO TWITTER

In what feels like a direct comment on not only the state of Twitter but the state of fandoms of all shapes and sizes, this meme makes short work of satirizing the everyday life of female fans and creators on that (or any) social media platform. It’s not just women either!

People of color, LGBT folks or anyone who’s not a straight white guy get abused online by small-minded trolls, so it makes perfect sense that Bruce would try and protect Diana from the vitriol. Not that she needs protecting from any haters, but we have a feeling that her hopeful attitude towards humanity and her need to be its defender -- abandoning her own people for her righteous cause no less -- would take a severe knock if she spent more than a half hour on Twitter.

1 IMAGINATION

Now this would be an epic prank. Although it wasn’t anywhere to be seen in the movie (that’s kind of the point though, right?), Wonder Woman’s invisible jet is a beloved part of her history, and while it’s been missing from the comics for a while too, fans still love it. What if it never existed though, and Diana was just pranking us all?

It’s not the strangest thing a superhero has ever done; after all, Spider-Man had a car for a short time, exchanging the ease of swinging through the city for sitting in rush hour traffic. With that in mind, is it really so strange to imagine a world in which Diana would sit like she’s riding in a plane whenever she flew anywhere, just to fool her super friends? Well maybe, but it’s still a fun idea from Deviant artist TwilightHomunculus.
