This July marks a bold, new beginning for Wonder Woman as the award-winning creative team of Mariko Tamaki, Mikel Janin and Jordie Bellaire kicks off their run on the Amazon hero with Wonder Woman #759. Launching with an epic, action-packed two-issue story arc, Diana Prince relocates cross-country to set up a new home for herself in the aftermath of her recent battle against the Four Horsewomen, while contemplating her own superhero legacy.

In an exclusive interview with CBR, Janin teases what's to come for Wonder Woman next, the timeless -- and timely -- appeal of the character and shares exclusive preview pages from Wonder Woman #759, showcasing the Amazon superhero in action in all her glory.

CBR: How did this project all come about? Was Wonder Woman a character you had wanted to illustrate for some time?

Mikel Janin: Definitely. I’ve been wanting to draw Wonder Woman for quite a while. I had a few chances to draw Diana in the past, but just in covers or as a side character in the Justice League. There were some conversations about working on the book a while back, and unfortunately, it didn’t happen. But when this opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I couldn’t be happier of how these issues are coming along.

How has it been working with Mariko Tamaki and Jordie Bellaire on this project?

Janin: Really fantastic. I’ve already been working with Jordie for a while, and I can’t insist enough on how great she is. Working on the Wonder Woman comic has been a great opportunity for both of us to flex different artistic muscles compared to what we did on Batman, and Jordie has delivered some incredible talent here: stunning palette choices, beautiful contrasts, really, really top-notch colors.

Also have to mention the amazing work our letterer Pat Brosseau did, as well as the DC Editorial team. It’s one of these books where everyone was 100% into bringing their best, and I really think it shows in the results.

As for Mariko, readers are gonna love her take on Diana! She brings in the small normal life moments that make superheroes human and relatable -- which is kind of Mariko’s trademark -- but she jumps easily to the quick action, then to the epic scale, or to horror seamlessly. Working with her has been a fantastic opportunity, and I really hope we’ll have more chances to work together soon.

This opening issue features several pretty incredible double-page spreads. What aspects of the character were you keen on bringing to visual life?

Janin: Yeah, this book has a very epic, cinematic scale. But is also a Wonder Woman book, which means we see the world through her eyes. So while we go through the epic battles or car chases, we never lose sight on the humanity of the characters, the compassion she feels on everyone, or the joy of just being Wonder Woman. I’ve tried to convey all this on the pages, and I think I’ve mostly succeeded. I hope the readers will agree!

What has been the most personally rewarding aspect of getting to illustrate Wonder Woman so far?

Janin: In those months of craziness and disturbing news in the real world, I’ve been lucky to be a little distracted from them, working on a beautiful book about one of the best fictional characters in modern era. I feel a bit like Wonder Woman has been helping me through this. That’s the power of inspiring characters like her.

What can you tease about what's coming next for Wonder Woman?

Janin: I don’t think I can say much, but it’s safe to say that those look like great times for Wonder Woman, and I’m eagerly waiting for what Mariko has in store for her. I’m 100% sure it’s going to be epic, both inside the book and out of the pages. We need Diana’s brightness during times like this.

Written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Mikel Janin, Wonder Woman #759 goes on sale July 28 from DC Comics.
