Lynda Carter, who first portrayed Wonder Woman in the 1970s television show of the same name, described her emotional first reaction to Gal Gadot's depiction of the hero.

In an interview with The Guardian, Carter explained that seeing Gadot in the role was exciting. "I was thrilled," she said. "I was standing, I was applauding, I was crying, I was laughing. I was holding the hand of my daughter and husband." She did admit, however, that it was "strange to see another woman taking that mantle."

Carter starred in the Wonder Woman television series as the titular superhero and her secret identity, Diana Prince. The series lasted for three seasons and aired on ABC and CBS from 1975 to 1979. As the original actor to portray Wonder Woman in live-action, Carter appeared in the post-credits scene for Wonder Woman 1984, which was released in 2020, where she plays the Amazonian warrior Asteria. In the scene, Asteria saves a young woman from being crushed by a telephone pole, then says, "I've been doing this for a long time," which can be seen as a reference to her tenure as Wonder Woman.

Carter Returns for Wonder Woman 3

After appearing in the Wonder Woman sequel, Carter will reprise the role in Wonder Woman 3, which will also be directed by Patty Jenkins, who has helmed the previous two films. Gadot confirmed Carter's role in the upcoming DCEU film in November 2021. "First of all, Lynda has mentored me from the very first moment that I got cast as Wonder Woman," Gadot said at the time. "She was always there, talking to me, giving me tips and everything. She's a true champion of what Patty [Jenkins] and I have been doing, and it was so great that we managed to find the right opportunity to bring her to the last movie and now to the third one." Carter appeared briefly in an end-credits scene of Wonder Woman 1984.

While there is no official release date for Wonder Woman 3 just yet, Gadot provided an update on the film's production schedule in January. "We're developing the script right now," she said. "We'll probably start in a year and a half or so." Following the successful debut of Wonder Woman 1994, which premiered on HBO Max, Warner Bros. fast-tracked the threequel, giving it the green light shortly after WW84's opening weekend.

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich said when the sequel was announced.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently available to stream on Disney+.
