Director Zack Snyder reveals that Wonder Woman may have possibly been part Kryptonian in his canon for the live-action DC Universe (DCU), formerly the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).Speaking at the Full Circle event where Snyder's previous DCEU films were screened for attending fans, Snyder said (via Twitter) that the Greek god Zeus was going to "possibly be a Kryptonian" in the cinematic universe. Wonder Woman (2017) revealed that the titular hero played by Gal Gadot is the daughter of Zeus, and Snyder suggested her powers would have been a result of her being part Kryptonian. The director continued, "The whole thing of whether magic and the gods... there's a version where, okay, that's cool, I guess. But there's also the more scientific...where do gods come from?" Snyder added, "We had played around with that quite a bit."RELATED: Zack Snyder Explains Why He Wanted Batman and Lois Lane to Date

Wonder Woman's Main Villain Is Part of a Man of Steel Mystery

After Snyder's comments, visual effects supervisor John "D.J." Des Jardin chimed in, revealing that the villain Ares from Wonder Woman, the "God of War" and Zeus' son, would have had ties to the Snyder-directed Man of Steel (2013). In the movie starring actor Henry Cavill as Superman, a superpowered Kryptonian, an old Kryptonian scout ship is found trapped within a massive body of ice by the United States Military and later the superhero himself. Des Jardin said, "Ares was the one that caused the scout ship to crash and be in the ice," adding that the villain killed the ship's crew.

Along with Man of Steel, Snyder directed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017) for the DCEU, although much of the latter film's theatrical cut was reshot by The Avengers director Joss Whedon. This caused fans of Snyder to demand that his original cut be released by Warner Bros., which became the alternate cut Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) on HBO Max. Flashbacks in both versions of the movie show Zeus and Ares fighting an army of Parademons, which is led by the villain Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) or Darkseid (Ray Porter) depending on the cut.

Zack Snyder’s DC Films Will Soon Be De-canonized

As of writing, Snyder is no longer working on the current DCU, and it is being remapped by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The upcoming movie The Flash is set to reboot the pre-existing universe Snyder's films are a part of, and it remains to be seen which, if any, projects may remain canon. Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023), a movie that treats Wonder Woman and the Greek gods as magic as opposed to Kryptonian descendants, shortened one scene to cut out references to the events of Justice League, but following the Shazam! sequel's lackluster performance, it is unknown if the hero played by Zachary Levi will be in the DCU moving forward.

The DCU films Snyder directed are available to stream now on HBO Max.
