Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe had a shaky start, but you could say it found its footing with Wonder Woman. Not only is it in consideration for the Academy Awards, but it's now the highest-grossing superhero origin movie -- ever.

According to ForbesWonder Woman saw its worldwide box office total tally up at $821.74 million yesterday, topping the total that 2002's Spider-Man movie swung in at. For a sense of how competitive this title actually is, Spider-Man finished at $821.7 million. Patty Jenkins has signed on for a sequel, and Gal Gadot will reprise her role in Justice League later this month.

Man of Steel and Batman v Superman actor Henry Cavill went as far as to say the DCEU movies before Wonder Woman were missteps. “There was a style they were going for, an attempt to be different and look at things from a slightly different perspective, which hasn’t necessarily worked."

“Yes, it has made money but it has not been a critical success; it hasn’t given everyone that sensation which superheroes should give the viewer," Cavill said. "I feel like now the right mistakes have been made and they haven’t been pandered [to], and we can start telling the stories in the way they need to be told. It is even better to come back from a mistake or stylistic error into the correct vein because it will make it seem that much stronger. Wonder Woman was the first step in the right direction.”

The untitled Wonder Woman sequel will follow Diana of Themyscira’s adventures after World War I into the Cold War of the ’80s. Rumors had surfaced in the past that Jenkins was looking at another period piece and that this battle against the Soviets was the most likely option. No production locations were included in the report, but as far as casting goes Jenkins is already lining up Chris Pine to return for the “full-blown” sequelIt's set to film in June 2018 for a December 2019 release.

Available now on digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as Diana, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff, David Thewlis as Ares, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Elena Anaya as Doctor Poison, and Lucy Davis as Etta Candy. You can catch Wonder Woman in action next in Justice League, which arrives on Nov. 17.
