WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Future State: Wonder Woman #1 by Joelle Jones, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

With the introduction of a new heroine to take up the title of Wonder Woman, a lot of expectations were on Yara Flor's shoulders. Even though she's a new character, there seemed to be a buzz whenever she was mentioned and so far, she has lived up to the hype.

Yara Flor has proven to not only be a very different kind of Wonder Woman, but a refreshing one. Spunky and impulsive, she is not refined and experienced like Diana, but she does have something Diana doesn't: a pet pegasus named, Jerry.

While trekking through the rainforest, Yara came across a creature whose head she quickly lopped off. But, since this is still Wonder Woman, it turned out that the monster was a hydra with several new heads that have come back to haunt Yara. So while the newest Wonder Woman ducked, dodged, weaved, and slashed, she whistled for her trusty mount: Jerry, who promptly ignored her to get a drink of water. While this frustrated Yara, she gave off the vibe that this sort of thing had happened before.

But her reliance on Jerry to get her out of a sticky situation revealed two things: First, Yara can't fly. She has super strength and the standard amazon abilities, but it is still too early to determine what the limits of her abilities are. Second, that she does trust Jerry. Her frustration with him seems to be a common recurrence, but the fact that Jerry is still acting as her ride is proof that Yara trusts him to watch her back when it truly matters. This trust is perhaps also backed up by knowledge of one another. Jerry seems to be able to communicate with Yara through his neighs and whinnies, so they might actually know one another as something beyond master and pet, but as friends. If so, then Jerry actually understands Yara's idiosyncrasies and what she can and cannot handle. So while his refusal to heed her call for assistance might seem like flippant disregard, it may actually be because he knew better than her when he was actually needed.

Jerry's presence is a step up from the time Diana had a pegasus or, more accurately, when Diana had Pegasus, the progenitor of the pegasus species. He helped Diana in her fight against the Gorgons and the underworld, even staying in Wonder Woman's secret base for a time but ultimately, he was unneeded. Diana could fly and if Yara's incident is any indication, given the dangers Amazons face every day, the best a pegasus can hope to provide a quick exit strategy. Jerry has proven himself to be more than that, acting as a friend and even verbal sparring partner with Yara. His first appearance may have been brief, but it certainly left an impression.
