With Wonder Woman due in theaters in roughly two weeks, star Gal Gadot shared her thoughts on what the character represents for gender equality and confirmed that the film version of Diana will indeed be feminist, much like her comic book counterpart.

“Wonder Woman is a feminist, of course,” Gadot told Entertainment Weekly. “I think people have a misconception about what feminism is. People think hairy armpits and women who burn bras and hate men. That’s not it. For me, feminism is all about equality and freedom and [women] choosing what we want to do. If it’s salaries, then we get paid equal to men. It’s not men vs. women or women vs. men."

The actress also shed light on how she wanted to portray her role given the socially conscious spotlight. "It was important to me that my character would never come and preach about how men should treat women. Or how women should perceive themselves," she explained.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script from Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Lucy Davis, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui and David Thewlis. The film opens June 2.
