The first look at DC's upcoming Wonder Woman book Dead Earth features Diana fighting monsters in a post-apocalyptic future.

The Hollywood Reporter has the first pages from Wonder Woman: Dead Earth by artist and writer Daniel Warren Johnson. Along with the cover, the preview showcases Johnson's unique art and a bloody action sequence from the book.

The scene in question follows a group of humans in a dystopian world as they're beset by a monstrous creature. Just as all hope looks lost, Wonder Woman appears, sporting a very different outfit, and helps turn the tide. Though she gets wounded and has to be helped by one of the survivors, she quickly recovers and slays the beast with her bare hands. But judging by her final words, it appears that Diana is in the dark about where she is and what has happened to her.

On tackling his first DC comic and writing the iconic Wonder Woman, Johnson revealed that he was hesitant about joining the project—until the character finally clicked:

I never really had an interest in reading Wonder Woman. I knew that I liked what she stood for and her unique view of the world, but the visual representation of the character never really connected with me. But the more I thought about it, it became a fun challenge. Could I make a Wonder Woman comic that I would be willing to buy? Then, as I began to do more research on her, I began to see more depth and interesting conflicts that I believed I could explore in a fun and dynamic way, all while doing it in my style of storytelling.

Of course, the big draw of Dead Earth is that it features Wonder Woman as the lone survivor of the DC universe. For Johnson, this meant a chance to dive even deeper into the character:

With Dead Earth, I knew that I had a chance to separate Diana from the DC universe, and especially with the larger page count, could really get into her head and see how she thinks about things. From the beginning, I wanted her to be on her back foot, trying to figure things out while witnessing just how far humanity has fallen.

The new Wonder Woman book is a four-issue limited series that will release under DC's new Black Label. Along with art and words by Johnson, known for books like Murder Falcon and Extremity, Mike Spicer will be providing colors. And from the looks of the art in the previews, the titular dead Earth will be alive with vibrant hues. The pair will also tackle variant covers for all four issues.

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1 will hit shelves on December 18, 2019.
