Wonder Woman has fought many arduous foes over the years, with her rogues' gallery constantly bridging the gap between gods and mortals. Like many heroes, said rogues' gallery also involves "mirror image" villains who create a dark parallel to the Amazing Amazon. Perhaps her most overlooked, however, was essentially a gender-swapped version of Princess Diana herself.

Captain Wonder was a menace to Wonder Woman in the Bronze Age of Comics, but he was much more than just a character who wore a similar costume with a masculine mystique. This "male Wonder Woman" was the creation of another of the Amazon Princess' most dangerous opponents, utilizing the body of Diana's beloved Steve Trevor.

Captain Wonder Was a Combination of Steve Trevor and Doctor Psycho

Captain-Wonder-DC-Comics (2) (1)

Though he debuted in Wonder Woman #289 (by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan), Captain Wonder combined two male figures who had been in Wonder Woman's life since the Golden Age of Comics. He was created by Doctor Psycho, a diminutive menace who had consistently vexed Diana and women everywhere. Back in the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths era, Doctor Psycho utilized ectoplasm and occult abilities alongside his own mental powers. Eventually developing greater control of these powers, Psycho kidnapped Wonder Woman's love interest Steve Trevor to use him as a vessel.

Drawing from Steve Trevor's pre-existing desires to be a powerful hero in his own right, Doctor Psycho drew out his ectoplasmic energy and created the visage of Captain Wonder. He was essentially Steve Trevor wearing a male version of Wonder Woman's costume, this being would be twisted through Psycho's ambitions. Due to his intense ferocity, the upgraded Doctor Psycho -- in the form of Captain Wonder -- was actually stronger than Wonder Woman. In fact, he had the ability to fly, which was a skill that Wonder Woman lacked in that era. He even gained control over Diana's lasso and Invisible Jet, not to mention teaming up with her fellow foe Silver Swan. With this incredible power level, it's somewhat surprising that the villain has yet to resurface.

Wonder Woman's Male Counterpart Has Never Returned

DC's Doctor Psycho grins maniacally

Captain Wonder's final pre-Crisis appearance was his last appearance in general, having never come back afterward. This likely stemmed from the fact that Steve Trevor in the new continuity was a much older man and not Diana's love interest. Similarly, actual gods and mythological beings increasingly became the norm in Wonder Woman's world. Despite that, Doctor Psycho himself was still a major factor, leaving the opportunity for some version of the character to come back. That's definitely the case in Wonder Woman's modern comics, which have restored Steve to his former place of prominence.

Having an ace such as Captain Wonder up his sleeve, Doctor Psycho would easily become one of Wonder Woman's strongest opponents. His small, unbecoming nature has always been a handicap in this regard, but with his increased notoriety thanks to the Harley Quinn animated series, now's the best time to up Doctor Psycho's ante. It would also provide an interesting commentary on superhero supporting cast members. After all, Captain Wonder is actually Steve's fantasy, not Psycho's, so this desire for power and potential jealousy could make for great drama.

It'd also be interesting to see a male Wonder Woman "counterpart" who's outright stronger than her. Steve's own morality could even counteract Psycho's ambitions, turning Captain Wonder into a true hero. The fact that Captain Wonder isn't really what he seems also brings things back to Wonder Woman's central motif of truth, proving that true power cannot be based on a lie or manipulation. Regardless of that caveat, bringing back Captain Wonder would not only increase Doctor Psycho's profile and power set but also give DC its greatest male Amazon yet.
