The success of the first Wonder Woman film led to a planned spinoff centering on the Amazons of Themiscyra. And according to one of its stars, the scope of that spinoff may span generations.

Connie Nielsen — who portrays the Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons — discussed the film's timeline with CinemaBlend. "Well, I can tell you that it's not just after what happens in Wonder Woman," Nielsen said. "There's also some other stuff in there, which is related to a prior time as well. There is a lot of different sort of things that you can see where the story is a little bit origin minded, but there are also other times involved."

From Nielsen's comments, it sounds like the Amazons spinoff will take place prior to and after the first Wonder Woman film, and possibly explore the Amazons' origins. In Wonder Woman, it was revealed that the Amazons retreated to Themiscrya following the god of war Ares' attempts to destroy humanity. In Wonder Woman 1984, the Amazonian warrior Asteria supposedly sacrificed her life for the other Amazons to escape to Themiscrya. A mid-credits scene revealed that Asteria survived and is living among humankind, similar to Diana.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins confirmed that while she would not direct the Amazons spinoff, she does plan on producing it. "I'm not going to direct it, hopefully. I'm going to try really hard not to. It's not going to be easy," Jenkins said. She also confirmed that the Amazons spinoff will lead into Wonder Woman 3, which she will also direct and co-write.
