The third film in the DC Universe's Wonder Woman saga is reportedly not moving forward at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple sources state that director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 is "dead" in its current form. This news comes ahead of new DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran's pivotal presentation to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav regarding their multi-year plan for the DCU, which is expected to take place next week.

THR reports that Jenkins recently submitted her treatment for Wonder Woman 3, which she co-wrote with Geoff Johns. However, DC's Gunn and Safran -- as well as Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy -- broke the news to Jenkins that, as it stood, the Wonder Woman threequel did not line up with their new (though still developing) plans for the on-screen DC Universe. No decision has been made regarding what happens next.

Does Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman Have a Future in the DCU?

News of Wonder Woman 3 being scrapped comes a mere day after Gal Gadot -- who has played Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in the DCU since 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- made a heartfelt post to social media that, at the time, seemed to be teasing the character's on-screen future. "A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman," Gadot wrote. "I've been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I'm grateful for YOU. The fans. Can't wait to share her next chapter with you."

Following her DCU debut in Batman v Superman, Gadot reprised her role as Diana Prince in Jenkins' first Wonder Woman film, which hit theaters in 2017 to massive critical and commercial success. Gadot's Wonder Woman then appeared in 2017's Justice League, later also appearing in its 2021 director's cut, Zack Snyder's Justice League. Not counting that film, however, Gadot's final appearance as the Princess of Themyscira came in Jenkins' 2020 Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. The DCU's Wonder Woman did make a cameo in Gunn's 2021 HBO Max series Peacemaker, though she was played by a body double named Kimberley von Ilberg, rather than Gadot herself. A third Wonder Woman film with Jenkins and Gadot had been green-lit in December 2020, though that was under previous leadership at Warner Bros.

James Gunn and Peter Safran Are Revamping the DCU

The apparent axing of Wonder Woman 3 isn't the only news regarding the DCU's future under Gunn and Safran to come out of THR's report. The outlet also explains that Jason Momoa's time as Aquaman could be coming to an end after 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom -- the final project to be green-lit under the previous regime -- but that Momoa is being considered to take over as another DC character: Lobo.

THR's report also raises some serious doubts regarding whether or not the Henry Cavill-led Man of Steel will get a sequel after all. While Warner Bros. was indeed developing a sequel to Man of Steel following Cavill's return as Superman in Black Adam, that was before Gunn and Safran began formulating their own plan for the DCU's future. On that note, while Cavill apparently filmed a cameo for the upcoming DCU feature The Flash, it may not be used in the final cut, so the film doesn't give the appearance of promising something the studio doesn't plan to deliver on. The aforementioned Black Adam is also of note, as a sequel to the Dwayne Johnson-led DCU film is being called "unlikely" at this stage.
