Actress Gal Gadot confirmed that a script is currently in the works for the next Wonder Woman film.While promoting her upcoming Netflix movie Red Notice, Gal Gadot was asked by Variety about when fans can expect to see the next Wonder Woman film. Though Gadot couldn't provide an exact answer, she did say, "I can't tell you yet, but we're working on the script." The interviewer then asked if Gadot could provide any clues for the film's plot, to which the actor joked, "No, because then people will come off the roof and take me away."
Originally announced late last year, Wonder Woman 3 is being fast-tracked by Warner Bros. It is set to feature the return of the series' director Patty Jenkins, who also wrote Wonder Woman 1984. At DC FanDome, Jenkins and original Wonder Woman actor Lynda Carter briefly touched on the production's development, joking about how little they could say about the movie. Jenkins, in reference to the trio of herself, Gadot and Carter, said, "We are all three very excited about some exciting things coming up with Wonder Woman 3."
Like the first film in the trilogy, Wonder Woman 3 will be shown exclusively in theaters. Part of the reason behind this decision comes from Jenkins herself, who is against the practice of day-and-date streaming. While speaking on a panel at CinemaCon, Jenkins said that she thinks that straight-to-streaming productions "look like fake movies," explaining that she doesn't think that they create legendary greatness.
This "fakeness" is considered by many to be amongst the factors that hindered Wonder Woman 1984 when it was released last year. Jenkins designed the film to connect audiences together through the magic of spectacle, but with theaters closed in the midst of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there was no foreseeable way to accomplish that feat for WW84. Ultimately, the film was offered up for free to users on HBO Max, which broke Jenkins' heart. It was also panned by many viewers and critics, with many citing the film's pacing, overall narrative and effects as key issues.
For fans who want to see new Wonder Woman adventures but don't want to wait for her next film, the character will be the centerpiece of the upcoming comic storyline, Trial of the Amazons. Set to begin in 2022, it features Wonder Woman, Artemis, Hippolyta, Yara Flor, Nubia and the Amazons at odds with one another over the future of Themyscira. Trial of the Amazons will be written by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, Vita Ayala, Stephanie Williams, Joelle Jones and Jordie Bellaire, and will usher in the next age for Wonder Woman after the celebration of her 80th anniversary.
