Following a strong opening weekend from Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. has given Wonder Woman 3 the green light with star Gal Gadot to return as the titular character and Patty Jenkins to return as writer and director.

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women -- Gal and Patty -- who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," said Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich as reported by Variety

"Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we're seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend," said executive vice president and general manager of WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer, Andy Forssell. "During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option."

Wonder Woman 1984 debuted Christmas Day simultaneously in select theaters and streaming on HBO Max. Despite mixed reviews from critics and the option for moviegoers to stream the film at home, the film is currently on track to having the best box office opening weekend since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began, collecting $16.7M from 2,100 North American theaters.

Up until now, the possibility of a third Wonder Woman film was still up in the air. Jenkins had previously mentioned that she "wasn't sure" about a third installment in the DC Extended Universe franchise, despite already having a story in mind. The director did stipulate one of her "requirements" for a third film, which was the possibility of a theatrical model for the film's release. Franchise star Gadot had also mentioned that a third film would bring "a nice closure" to the trilogy.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film is currently in theaters and on HBO Max.
