Despite the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins believes there are benefits to doing more standalone superhero films.
"I think the exception to that was that Marvel had such success doing a shared universe," Jenkins shared with Total Film Magazine. "But that certainly shouldn’t be the status quo. I think you should look at comic books. There’s this huge variety of comic books, and their look and tone and world are radically different. And they don’t always inevitably join together. Sometimes they do, and that’s really fun, and that’s that thing."
Jenkins went on to express her excitement that Marvel is releasing films that have different tones, using Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow as examples. "But I love that about DC, and I’ve always thought that that’s a wonderful thing about DC...they were all so different."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with 2003's Iron Man and has currently spanned 23 films, all featuring characters sharing the same universe. DC offered its own version, referred to by fans as the DC Extended Universe, which began with 2013's Man of Steel and includes 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017's Justice League and more. Recently, DC has begun producing more standalone films, including Todd Phillips' Joker and Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey.
Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters Aug 14.
