Warner Bros. officially decided on Nov. 18 that its film, Wonder Woman 1984, will premiere theatrically and on HBOMax on Dec. 25 in the U.S.Prior to this statement, Patty Jenkins -- the film's co-writer and director -- declared that Wonder Woman's sequel wouldn't be released on streaming platforms, because she wanted to support the theatre business with its ticket sales. Jenkins released her official statement on the film's release date and its dual release on Twitter.RELATED: Unlisted Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer Confirms Christmas Theatrical, HBO Max Release

Her official statement read, "THE TIME HAS COME. At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else. We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season.

Watch it in THEATRES, where it is made safe to do so (check out the great work theatres have done to make it so!) And available in the safety of your home on HBOMAX where it is not. Happy holidays to all of you. We hope you enjoy our film as much as we enjoyed making it."

Although Jenkins' statement called theatres a safe place to see films, she didn't address the fact that the Center for Disease Control confirmed a 43% infection increase in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the last seven days and reported 94% of the U.S. jurisdictions seeing rising COVID-19 cases as of Nov. 18.

In October, Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff already seemed to be shifting towards a streaming release when she said, "It really is about how the U.S. continues to open and whether there are any other surges. We have to be more conscious of the total demand in the U.S. as we think about Wonder Woman."

This statement read contradictory to what Jenkins said at the time. "Direct-to-streaming is not even being discussed," Jenkins said. "We are still 100% behind the theatrical experience for (Wonder Woman 1984) and supporting our beloved theater business."

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters and HBO Max on Dec. 25, while debuting theatrically in international markets starting on Dec. 16. The film will be available for a month on HBO Max in the U.S. included at no additional cost.
