Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins assures the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2017's Wonder Woman will debut in theaters, saying that a direct-to-streaming/Premium Video on Demand release is "not even being discussed."

In response to a report claiming that Wonder Woman 1984 would go the way of Scoob! or Mulan and head straight to a streaming platform, rather than release in theaters, one fan on Twitter stood by the film's announced theatrical release date of Dec. 25. Jenkins herself then quote-tweeted the post, adding, "Correct. Direct-to-streaming is not even being discussed. We are still 100% behind the theatrical experience for [Wonder Woman 1984] and supporting our beloved theater business."

Wonder Woman 1984 was originally slated for release on Dec. 13, 2019. It was then moved up to Nov. 1, 2019, before being delayed to June 5, 2020. The DC Extended Universe film then faced an additional three delays as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the ensuing shutdown of movie theaters, first being pushed back to Aug. 14, then Oct. 2 and, finally, Dec. 25. Warner Bros. is evidently intent on sticking by the Christmas Day release, with Wonder Woman 1984 staying put, even as DC films like The Batman, The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam have all had their release dates moved. Notably, Jenkins has gone on record saying she fears what long-term effects the shutdown of theaters and abundance of direct-to-streaming releases could have on the moviegoing experience.

Set several decades after the events of 2017's Wonder Woman, 1984 rejoins Diana Prince in the 1980s as she comes face-to-face with villains Maxwell Lord and Cheetah and reunites with lost love Steve Trevor, who was thought dead following his sacrifice at the end of the previous film.
