Director/co-writer Patty Jenkins debunked some fans' speculation that Wonder Woman 1984 would feature a romantic relationship between the titular hero and Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah.

"It might have [happened] in a different storyline," Jenkins said in an interview with SFX magazine. "But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve [Trevor] coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. There wasn’t room for two for Diana."

Wonder Woman 1984 will feature Kristen Wiig as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah, who is one of Wonder Woman's most enduring foes in the comics. Chris Pine, meanwhile, will return as Steve Trevor, who was a World War I pilot and Diana's love interest in 2017's Wonder Woman before sacrificing himself to destroy deadly gas. While official details haven't been revealed about how Trevor returns, Gal Gadot has said they bring him back in a way that "serves the narrative."

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters Aug. 14.
