Wonder Woman 1984 kicked off Warner Bros.' DC FanDome event with a brand new trailer.
The new trailer started with Diana running -- through Themiscyra, through a field and finally down Pennsylvania Avenue. An overhead shot panned across an Olympian stadium, which revealed young Diana standing alongside her fully grown Amazon sisters before the games began. "This world is not yet ready for all that you will do," Hippolyta cautioned in a voice-over narration.
"Your time will come, Diana," she promised, as scenes from both the past and present blended together. "And everything will be different." With a scream, adult Diana aimed her lasso at the sky and swung away into the bright blue horizon, before cutting to a night scene where she used her lasso to ride a bolt of lightning.
From there, the trailer focused more on the villains than the heroes, with Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord promising to "change your life." "Anything you want, anything you dream of, you can have it," he announced.
Immediately, Barbara Minerva makes it clear what she wants: to be "an apex predator." Then, she revealed the roots of her problem with Diana. "You've always had everything, while people like me have had nothing," she hissed in a voice over narration. "Well, now it's my turn... Get used to it."
As Barbara spoke, the trailer flashed through scenes of a White House brawl. After taking down a few armed guards, she finally came face-to-face with Barbara, who had not yet changed into her final form. A fight ensued, with Diana using her gauntlets to block an oncoming attack.
Suddenly, the fight jumped from day to night, from inside the White House to outside during a thunderstorm. There, Diana threw down with a fully transformed Cheetah, who used her new body and abilities to leap with inhuman strength and agility. "Barbara, what did you do?" Diana breathed, wearing her golden armor, and they clashed once more.
Despite the overall serious tone of the trailer, it ended on a lighter note, with Steve putting on an '80s fashion show for Diana. "I think we can do bettered," she mused, as he showed off his sparkly, American flag-themed fanny pack.
The film takes place in the 1980s, nearly four decades after the events of the first movie. As she goes about her life in 1984, she is stunned by the return of Chris Pine's Steve Trevor, despite his death in Wonder Woman. Soon, they find themselves going up against Barbara Minerva, her friend turned foe, and the mysterious Maxwell Lord, a sleazy businessman.
Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters Oct. 2.
