With the poster for the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 was released, it gave us one of our first looks at Diana in the sequel to her hit 2017 film, though still didn't offer much beyond a shining look at Wonder Woman's new armor. The poster featured Wonder Woman in her new golden armor in front of a psychedelic background that got many fans speculating.

Now, we're going to take a closer look at that poster, as well as everything else we know about Wonder Woman 1984 to get an idea of what we can expect from the upcoming film. We'll focus on the new characters debuting in Patty Jenkins's highly anticipated film, as well as take a look at what the comics can tell us about her new armor, and what it might mean for Wonder Woman 1984.

CHEETAH AND MAX LORD

Gal Gadot and Chris Pine returned to the film alongside director Patty Jenkins, with a number of new names joining the cast in the months that followed. Kristen Wiig was cast as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, one of Wonder Woman's deadliest villains, and the first look of Wiig in a museum was one of the earliest images of the film released.

Pedro Pascal was also announced for the film, but his role was kept secret for months though we got our first look at Pascal's character without any context as to who he was playing. Jenkins recently revealed his character was Max Lord, who has a long and interesting history with the Justice League and Diana.

KINGDOM COME

Many fans quickly noticed the resemblance between Wonder Woman's new armor and her Kingdom Come armor, which saw Diana don a golden armored version of her costume, complete with the same shoulder guards we see in the Wonder Woman 1984 poster, to fight alongside other aged heroes as they dealt with a new generation of anti-heroes that were taking more lives than they were saving.

Whenever she's worn that armor in Kingdom Come or the DC Universe, it's been for all-out war. While Cheetah and Maxwell Lord are both powerful villains, she's already taken on Ares and later Doomsday and Steppenwolf without any extra protection in her regular costume, and that begs the question of what precisely Diana is trying to protect herself from.

MORE VILLAINS?

It's possible that Diana could lose her powers or be otherwise weakened in the film, which has happened plenty of times in comics and would justify the new armor. However, there could also be another mystery villain waiting in the wings to fight her. There are still a number of actors cast in unknown roles including Kristoffer Polaha, Gabriella Wilde, and Ravi Patel.

There are a few interesting options for other villains, including Silver Swan, who recently appeared in the animated Wonder Woman: BloodlinesGiganta, Circe, or even a Titan of Myth like Cronus are all fairly major names from her rogues gallery who could reasonably show up on the big screen.

Even though we might not know too much now, the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 is set to drop before the end of the year, and that seems likely to provide a few more clues about the DC Extended Universe movie.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot as Diana, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film opens on June 5, 2020.
