While Warner Bros. fast-tracked production on Wonder Woman 1984 after the runaway success of the original 2017 film, fans shouldn't get their hopes up for another sequel being put into rapid development.

Patty Jenkins, who directed both DC Extended Universe films in addition to co-writing and producing the upcoming sequel, revealed she and star Gal Gadot are not planning to develop a third film right away. While admitting that she had mapped out a story, including a spinoff film focused on the Amazons, Jenkins indicated she and Gadot would prefer to take their time developing a sequel and focus on other projects in the interim.

"We actually already know the whole story, and some because it was an Amazon movie as well, so we already have it all mapped out. It’s just a matter of will we change our minds and when," Jenkins said in a group interview attended by Collider and other outlets. "I think what we don’t want to do is do it back-to-back. It’s been great doing these two movies back-to-back, but I think it’s important to give it a little rest in between and I like doing other things in between and Gal has other things to do. I never want to make decisions too far in advance. We have to see if we both feel like making the movie we think we want to make when the moment comes."

Wonder Woman 1984 was greenlit one month after the release of the original film, with principal photography beginning June 2018 -- approximately one year after its predecessor's opening. While the extended post-production time has taken the pressure off the filmmakers, Jenkins has no plans to create back-to-back sequels again, making a two-year gap between films unlikely.

"It would not be two [years], I’ll tell you that," Jenkins said. "I’m not doing that again."

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord and Natasha Rothwell. The film opens on June 5, 2020.
