After making a huge impression with her solo film in 2017, Diana of Themyscira is back in the sequel Wonder Woman 1984. While the film has been delayed numerous times, Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor and the Amazonians will move the DC Extended Universe forward when the film finally releases.

Here's everything we know right now about the upcoming film.

THE STORY SO FAR

The original Wonder Woman was set during World War I and saw the titular hero leaving her home of Themyscira with Captain Steve Trevor to stop Ares. While Wonder Woman does eventually defeat Ares, Steve dies in the process, sacrificing himself to safely dispose of a plane filled with chemical weapons.

Set before Diana's appearances in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League, Wonder Woman 1984 jumps ahead decades from the setting of its predecessor, trading in an Army helmet for a perm. Set in the titular year of 1984, during the height of the Cold War, Diana will face off against two new formidable foes. One is media businessman Maxwell Lord, who seems to be selling prosperity with undertones of greed. The other is friend-turned-enemy Barbara Minerva, who eventually becomes the envious Cheetah. She'll also encounter a familiar face in her previously-deceased lover Steve Trevor.

TRAILER

The official trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 was released in December 2019. Set to New Order's "Blue Monday," the feeling of the '80s is alive in every frame, from an action sequence in a mall to the teased-out hair of Barbara Minerva. Several key moments are also highlighted in the trailer, including the return of Steve Trevor, as well as Diana sporting her legendary gold armor from Kingdom Come.

The second trailer for the film debuted during the movie's panel at DC FanDome. It showed the dangerous side to Maxwell Lord, as he promised to grant the deepest, darkest desires of viewers. The trailer also gave a first look to Barbara's feral, final form as Cheetah.

RELEASE DATE

Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to release in theaters worldwide on October 2, 2020. That date has been anything but static, though. The film was initially announced for December 13, 2019, then moved up to November 1 of that same year. In late 2018, the date was once again changed to June 5, 2020, due to both the opportunity to make it a summer release similar to its predecessor and to not come too soon after the release of Joker that October.

However, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in early 2020 caused theaters to close worldwide, and Warner Bros. pushed the film back to August 14, taking the spot of upcoming horror flick Malignant. As the situation worsened in some areas, arguments popped up as to whether the film may have a streaming release like several other movies in 2020. Ultimately, Warner Bros. announced that Wonder Woman 1984 would have a Christmas 2020 release date, and that it's expecting to play in theaters only.

CAST AND CREW

Patty Jenkins returned as director, having helmed Wonder Woman and turning it into the highest-grossing movie by a solo female director in cinematic history. She penned the script alongside Geoff Johns and David Callaham. Gal Gadot picked back up her iconic wristlets to play Wonder Woman, though seemingly a wiser and more guarded version of the hero. Despite dying at the end of the previous film, Chris Pine returns as Steve Trevor. Other returning characters for the sequel include the similarly-deceased Antiope (Robin Wright), as well as Diana's mother Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen).

The two big new roles in Wonder Woman 1984 go to familiar faces. Pedro Pascal, known for his work on The Mandalorian and Game of Thrones, plays magnate Maxwell Lord, who he describes as a "dream-seller." Comedian Kristen Wiig plays archaeologist and frenemy Barbara Ann Minerva, who eventually becomes the devious Cheetah. Jenkins sought out the Saturday Night Live alumna for her ability to play both silly and serious, showcasing the full range of Barbara's two identities. Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Kristoffer Polaha and Amr Waked have also been cast in currently undisclosed roles

RUMORS

Wonder Woman 1984 Steve Trevor Chris Pine

The constant delays in release has allowed many products and images to leak around Wonder Woman 1984, which give some indication as to the film's biggest plot points. In April, a photo was leaked on Twitter that showed Diana in flight, a power she did not have in the first film, though it's unclear at this time if that will play a role in the movie. There have also been rumors Wonder Woman will get her Invisible Jet in the film. Additionally, merchandise has teased just what Cheetah will look like in the film.

One of the biggest mysteries going into the film is the resurrection of Steve Trevor following his sacrifice in the previous movie. But novelizations of the film may hint towards how he is brought back to life. According to the books, he is brought back thanks to a mysterious Dreamstone, a relic created by gods that has the power to grant wishes. Diana allegedly makes a wish on the gemstone at a gala held at the Smithsonian, unaware of its powers.

Wonder Woman 1984

In January 2019, after principal photography on Wonder Woman 1984 was completed, Jenkins said she had the plot for a possible third film mapped out. By the end of that year, she warned fans that another installment would take longer than expected, and the hiatus between films two and three would be longer than the one between one and two. In June 2020, Jenkins revealed she had put mapping out movie three on hold, as she was looking to set it during modern times and debating how or whether to incorporate the pandemic into the plot.

Additionally, Jenkins announced in December 2019 that a spin-off film was in the works, which would focus on the community of Amazonian women in Themyscira. Several months later, she clarified that she would not be directing the upcoming film, but would participate as an executive producer.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters and HBO Max on Dec. 25, while debuting theatrically in international markets a week earlier starting on Dec. 16. The film will be available for a month on HBO Max in the U.S. included at no additional cost to subscribers.
