Wonder Woman 1984 is estimated to open with a little under $40 million at the overseas box office, which is below earlier projections for the film's global debut.

According to Deadline, Wonder Woman 1984 grossed an estimated $38.5 million over its opening weekend from 32 international markets, including Japan, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom. That's below the $60 million figure the industry predicted, which can partly be attributed to Wonder Woman 1984's surprisingly soft debut in China, where it made $18.8 million. The Middle Kingdom's numbers have been strong over the last several weeks, indicating the slow start may not be related to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Wonder Woman 1984's overseas performance was further impacted by several key markets suddenly closing in response to rising COVID-19 numbers, including theaters in Mexico City shutting down for the next few weeks and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson issuing a stay-at-home order that covers London and a good chunk of England. However, the film bowed in first place in all the Latin American markets where it released this weekend.

In a previous statement, Warner Bros. confirmed Wonder Woman 1984 will play in theaters in the UK and Ireland "where they are open." The film will also premiere on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) in those markets starting Jan. 13, 2021, where it will be made available to rent for a 48-hour period from "participating digital retailers." In the U.S., Wonder Woman 1984 will release in theaters on Dec. 25, and and will be available to stream on HBO Max the same day at no additional charge to those with a subscription.
