WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for Wonder Woman 1984, now available on HBO Max and in theaters.

Wonder Woman 1984 had a lot of homages to '80s pop culture, but one sequence actually embodies a famous moment from a '90s action thriller. During the chase sequence in Egypt, the movie may have referenced the rescue scene in 1994's Speed, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.

While in desert pursuit of the villainous Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), Diana grabs a sheet of scrap metal from one of the caravan trucks and uses it to slide underneath one of the trucks. She holds onto a turbine on the underbelly of the truck and is able to ride under it for some time as she plans her next move. It's a dicey venture as the metal scrapes against the sandy road, causing sparks to fly up around her, but Diana ultimately uses the momentum of the truck to flip it and propel herself forward in an incredible aerial stunt.

The rescue scene in Speed is not quite as impressive, but it puts Reeves' Jack Traven in a similar situation. Traven attempts to diffuse a bomb set under a public transportation bus that cannot decelerate under a certain speed or it will detonate, and in a last-ditch effort, he is lowered underneath the bus on a towed sled with wheels. Unable to diffuse the bomb, he is pulled back up through a cutout in the bus floor, leaving the sled to be crunched under the wheels.

The seamless under-the-bus riding in Speed is instantly recognizable as one of the most iconic action sequences in film history. Wonder Woman 1984 may have changed the setting from Los Angeles to just outside of Cairo, but the harrowing stunt is still the same. Being towed underneath a moving vehicle is not an ideal spot, but Diana Prince manages to use her strength to launch herself into a better position. Jack, on the other hand, needs the passengers' help to hoist him back aboard the bus safely.

It just goes to show that without even appearing in the film, Keanu can still find a way to leave his mark on some of Hollywood's biggest projects.
