Wonder Woman 1984 made its theatrical debut in China over the weekend, and has so far generated a mixed response from moviegoers in the country for having too much romance.

According to THR, Chinese moviegoers have widely complained that Wonder Woman 1984 contained too much romance and not enough of an emphasis on action. The superhero blockbuster has scored a 7.8/10 user rating from the digital ticket app Taopiaopiao and a 7.9/10 user rating from fellow digital ticket service Maoyan.

This mixed word-of-mouth appears to be impacting Wonder Woman 1984's box office prospects in the Chinese market. The project opened to just $18.8 million in the territory, while Maoyan projects it will finish its run in China with just $33.7 million. That total would be well below the $38 million Chinese opening weekend of the original Wonder Woman, let alone its $90.5 million cume in the territory.

These struggles at the Chinese box office are not the only obstacle Wonder Woman 1984 has faced in its theatrical run overseas. Wonder Woman 1984's international presence has been further impacted by several key markets suddenly closing in response to rising coronavirus (COVID-19) numbers, including theaters in Mexico City shutting down for the next few weeks and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson issuing a stay-at-home order that covers London and a good chunk of England.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters and HBO Max in the United States on Dec. 25 and is currently in theaters in international markets.
