Warner Bros. is expected to give an update about the theatrical release of Wonder Woman 1984 following months of delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

While the film is currently scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day, Warner Bros. is still thinking about postponing its release and will assess the landscape over the next couple of weeks.

"It has become clear that movie studios are not willing to release blockbuster product until key major markets are open," AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron said. He further explained that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's recent decision for cinemas to start reopening outside of New York City "is a monumental step in the right direction for our entire industry."

However, industry experts noted that Warner Bros. would be taking a big risk if it decides to keep Wonder Woman 1984 on the 2020 schedule, especially after Christopher Nolan's recent film Tenet failed to meet expectations in the United States by earning just $50 million in the last two months. While Tenet has done better internationally and generated $283 million since August, the film cost $200 million to produce.

Entertainment analyst Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Securities, added that he wouldn't be surprised if Warner Bros. pushed Wonder Woman 1984 to next year because "Cuomo opening theaters to 25 percent capacity isn't enough." He continued, "The gap in production means studios are super comfortable slipping things into 2021."

Wonder Woman 1984 was originally scheduled to release on Dec. 13, 2019, but was actually moved up to Nov. 1, 2019. Warner Bros. then made the decision to push the movie back seven months into June 5, 2020, but has pushed the film a handful of times due to the ongoing pandemic shutdown.

Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 25.
