Disney+'s upcoming Wonder Man series may be a Hollywood satire set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to a new report, the upcoming Marvel show is intended to be set in the MCU's version of Hollywood as a sardonic take on the city and its culture. The report comes from Variety's Joe Otterson, who first revealed that the series is in development. "I have also heard that this show could be a Hollywood satire, but that is not 100% confirmed," Otterson revealed. "It would make sense given Wonder Man's backstory as an actor and stuntman in the comics."

Although Simon Williams/Wonder Man has yet to officially debut in the MCU, The Suicide Squad's Nathan Fillion was originally set to appear as the character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 before his scenes were cut. The film would've featured several in-universe movie posters for Williams' films, including a Steve Jobs parody about Tony Stark. While deleted scenes aren't typically considered to be canon, director James Gunn previously confirmed Williams' films were in fact canonical and that he hoped Fillion's character would "rise again" in the future. Fillion also voiced the character in Hulu's animated M.O.D.O.K. series, which is set in a different continuity than the MCU's.

The initial report revealed that Wonder Man will be executive produced by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director and co-writer Destin Daniel Cretton, with Hawkeye's Andrew Guest serving as head writer for the series. Cretton's involvement is part of a multiyear deal the filmmaker signed with Marvel Studios that will also see him return to direct a Shang-Chi sequel. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said at the time, "Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi. We had a fantastic time working together on the film, and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we're thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can't wait to get started."

A lesser-known Marvel player, Wonder Man first appeared in 1964's The Avengers #9 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Don Heck. The character has played the role of both hero and villain throughout his history, serving as a member of The Avengers as well as Baron Zemo's Masters of Evil. Williams also shared a strong connection to Scarlet Witch and the Vision, an element of the character some say is best left to the comics.

Marvel Studios has yet to announce a release date for Wonder Man, but it will eventually premiere on Disney+.
