WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Wonder Girl #4, on sale now.

Yara Flor quickly proved to be a very different kind of Wonder Woman after making her debut in Future State.; one who relished the fight and knew how to look good while doing it. But she wasn't always the (mostly) competent hero that fans were introduced to years ahead into the DC Universe's future.

Yara started off much more green in the pages of Wonder Girl #4 (by  Joëlle Jones, Adriano Melo, Jordie Bellaire, Pat Brosseau). While training under Chiron, Yara's main weakness was revealed: her temper. So long as she couldn't rise above it, her true capabilities would never reveal themselves.

Anyone who has read Yara's adventures could see that she had... a bit of a reckless streak. No doubt a holdover from her earliest days. As Chiron put it, there was a defiance in Yara, despite every advantage that could be afforded to her, she still held on to a resistance that ultimately held her back. This manifested as a temper she could barely control and one that Chiron explained would only limit her, and perhaps even become a danger to her if she wasn't careful. After all, fighting angry leads to mistakes and that could be dangerous for everyone and everything around her.

He even stated that it could lead to her being controlled. Whether he meant being literally controlled by someone else exploiting her anger or the temper itself dictating her decisions rather than logic is unclear. What was certain was that Yara would progress no further in her training so long as she did not learn to temper her anger with humility. And that's where Jerry came in.

The pegasus who would become Yara's steed was also one of her first tests and the key to growing past her anger. Yara was tasked with taming him, but all her attempts failed. Forcing herself onto his back, coaxing him, none of it succeeded because Yara was not yet able to tame her own anger. Nothing she did would convince the pegasus to approach her. All of that combined with the mounting pressure of living up to her potential finally whittled Yara's spirit down to an emotional low. And while she took a moment to cry and reflect on how she wasn't living up to her potential, that was the moment that Jerry approached her, accepting Yara as his new rider.

This was how Yara managed to overcome her temper, by learning that forcing a solution was not always the answer. Before, she had tried to enforce her own will upon Jerry, both in blunt and subtle ways. But none of those worked because Jerry could sense the turmoil within Yara. So long as she couldn't master herself, she would never master him.

This is what makes Jerry accepting her so significant. Yara chose that moment to let go of her pride and the assumption she could do anything because other people told her she had a destiny. She chose to take a moment to reflect on how best to live up to those expectations, not simply believing she could achieve them because they said so. She took a moment to be humble and ask if she could do it. And that is what helped her move past her temper and rapidly achieve the potential everyone could see in her.
