Outside of being two of the most iconic comic book characters of the 1990s, Wolverine and Witchblade don't seem like they have a lot in common. However, these two had one of the most surprising whirlwind romances -- and marriages -- in comics history. In 2004, Logan and Sara Pezzini met and got married in Witchblade/Wolverine #1, by Chris Claremont and Eric Basaldua. While this might seem like a silly gimmick for a crossover, the presence of Claremont -- the legendary X-Men writer who oversaw Wolverine's rise to an icon -- gives the proceedings a legitimacy that many cross-publisher crossovers simply don't have.

While Wolverine has a famously tumultuous relationship history, Witchblade is usually the level-headed detective Sara Pezzini, and she's not one to jump headfirst into marriage, especially since this is her first marriage in comics. Both suffering from amnesia, neither Logan nor Sara were in their right state of mind when they went through with the wedding, which was part of an elaborate plot to separate Sara from the mystical powers of the Witchblade.

Wolverine Witchblade

After the two heroes figure out precisely who they are, Logan and Sara go on an epic rampage and defeat the Odessa Mafia and Kaylie, a young mutant who tried to wield the Witchblade for herself. As the two newlyweds successfully take back the Witchblade and take on the mobsters, Logan and Sara prove that they make a pretty good couple, even without the memory wipe.

As heroes, Wolverine and Witchblade are polar opposites. Sara is a detective, who uses her wit and powers of deduction just as much (if not more) than her superpowers. Meanwhile, Wolverine is the kind of superhero who relies on his raw power and regenerative abilities to win fights.

At the very end of the book, we see just how different and complementary the two personalities are to each other. Wolverine gets himself knocked out, and Sara has nowhere to go. She is about to be forced through mind control to jump off of a building and kill herself. With only the power of her intellect, Sara resists the mind control. This gives Wolverine enough time to heal, recover, and savagely attack their captors.

In the end, Sara and Logan know they got married under the influence of mind control, but in a tender moment, both heroes recognize that there is a genuine spark of emotion between them.

Witchblade and Wolverine's marriage might be the X-Men's strangest romance, and that's saying a lot. The tragedy of the story lies in the fact that Sara and Logan were a good couple. And as far as Logan's relationships go, marrying Sara wasn't his worst decision.

While Logan and Sara's status as heroes from two completely different comic universes meant that their relationship was doomed from the start, the two were still legally married. And somewhere in one of Marvel's many alternate realities, this comics odd couple may very well still be together.
