WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Wolverine #4-5 by Benjamin Percy, Viktor Bogdanovic, Matthew Wilson, and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

In Wolverine #4, Wolverine finds himself in an increasingly nightmarish situation. First, his happy place, the Red Tavern bar, is invaded by vengeful members of the Mutant Trauma Group. These extremists, hoping to punish Logan for all the lives he's ruined, drug him and take him, prisoner. Near the end of the issue, they leave Logan for dead when they tie him in a chair and place him on a frozen lake in Canada, where he's attacked by Omega Red and the Vampire Nation.

Wolverine has been battling vampires since this series' opening issue. Things aren't looking up for him in Wolverine #5 either. Here, the bloodsuckers string him up and try to feed on him. But he's rescued by Louise, a member of the Nightguard, a group devoted to fighting vampires. She explains that the monsters are rising up while the mutants are distracted with the establishment of Krakoa. The vampires aim to become even more powerful by evolving so that they can walk in the daylight. To fulfill this goal, the Vampire Nation wants to use Logan's blood because it has rare properties that could transform them.

Wolverine has Type E blood, which is only found in one in eight million people. It's also extraordinary because his blood is impervious to disease and illness. Type E blood may sounds like a perfect cure for the vampires' weakness to the sun. But the usefulness of Logan's blood is limited because, once it leaves his body, his healing factor isn't nearly as prevalent. So, at that point, Logan's blood isn't very helpful. It won't fully aid the vampires to combat their disease or their vulnerability to the sun. Still, the vampires seek Logan's blood to capitalize on its curative nature.

As a result, Wolverine #5 opens with vampires draining the blood out of Logan while he's trapped in a solid block of ice. When his captors leave, several young vampires steal Logan's body and flee the scene. During their escape, Wolverine uses his claws to break out of the ice. Though he initially clashes with the young vampires,  Logan learns that they aren't typical bloodsuckers because they only drink animal blood. Wolverine and his new allies attack the other vampires in a bloody battle where one of them hints that the vampires have grand ambitions.

Vampires Guard Wolverine

When Logan asks one of the vampires why they abandoned him, she says she didn't want to keep him prisoner for too long. Otherwise, the X-Men would come looking for him. With a knowing smile, she says, "We aren't ready for them. Yet." Logan kills her, so the reader is left wondering what the vampires have planned. Based on their repeated interest in Wolverine's blood, it's easy to predict why the Vampire Nation is targeting Logan's peers. Though other mutants' blood might not be as incredible as Logan's, it could still serve the same function.

At the beginning of Wolverine #5, Logan is in dire straights; he has been captured and frozen in a block of ice. Though young rebellious vampires help him escape, more trouble is clearly on the horizon. Dracula won't stop until his brethren can operate both at night and during the day. He sees the blood of mutants as the answer to all of the Vampire Nation's problems. This mindset threatens everything the X-Men have built with Krakoa. With each passing issue, Wolverine and his fellow mutants are rapidly approaching an all-out war with vampires where the survival of both groups is at stake.
