WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom #1 by Nick Spencer, Roge Antonio, Carlos Gomez, Ze Carlos, Alex Sinclair & VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

To save his enemy-turned-roommate-turned-friend Boomerang from Kingpin’s army of crime bosses, Spider-Man had to call in some help, and in his moment of need, he called on his former teammates from the New Avengers.

Spider-Man knew these heroes would help him, but they put him in his place first in Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom. As Spider-Man asked his old friends for help. Wolverine was quick to point out that Spider-Man only shows up when he needs help. When his former teammates reach out to him, they received silence, and every one of these heroes let Spider-Man know how bad of a friend he is.

Avengers Roast Spider-Man

Spider-Man stood face to face with Wolverine, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Spider-Woman and Hawkeye. It all started with Luke Cage saying that they have to draw a line somewhere. Spider-Man thought Cage was talking about helping save Boomerang. However, it was something very different for Spider-Man’s old friends in the New Avengers. None of them consider Spider-Man much of a friend because of how he acts. They took the time to drag Spider-Man through the dirt a little before telling him how they feel.

Jessica Jones pointed out how Spider-Man is pals now with Wilson Fisk, to which Spider-Man admitted it was Fisk's P.R. campaign, and it doesn't even sound like him. His friends said they don’t know who Spider-Man is half the time. Wolverine pointed out how he got his mind swapped with Doctor Octopus once. Hawkeye reminded Spider-Man of how an alien symbiote corrupted him once. Jessica Jones threw out that Kraven the Hunter even posed as Spider-Man before. Luke Cage admitted there is always something wrong with Spider-Man.

Spider-Man Bad Friend 1

The New Avengers dropped the bomb on him. Jessica Jones said there was a way people wouldn't be so quick to think the worst. Wolverine explains that they might think better of him if Spider-Man ever replied to his e-mails. Hawkeye even threw out how Spider-Man never attended one of their New Avengers reunion dinners. Spider-Man didn’t know there were reunion dinners, which Wolverine says was in one of the e-mails he never read. Spider-Man realized they were all right about him. He admitted he has been running from one catastrophe to another, letting a lot of friendships go. While Jessica Jones and Luke Cage admitted Spider-Man takes the loner role to the extreme, but they would be there for him.

Wolverine may know Spider-Man better than anyone there. In 2010's Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine by Jason Aaron and Adam Kubert, Spider-Man and Logan grew especially close, though they later forgot much of it.

This all stands in sharp contrast to who Spider-Man was for much of the 2000s. After joining the initial New Avengers team, Spider-Man was a regular across multiple Avengers teams for years, where he took his place alongside the other heroes of the Marvel Universe in a way he rarely has before or since. While he might be famous for his team-ups with other heroes, this era of Avengers stories gave Peter Parker deeper friendships with other heroes who he once only worked with on occasion.

While Peter Parker's team spirit is more focused on the other spider-themed heroes like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen and Madame Web today, this interaction stands as a reminder of how many friends Spider-Man has made across the Marvel Universe, even if he hasn't always been the best at maintaining those friendships.
