Comic Book Questions Answered – where I answer whatever questions you folks might have about comic books (feel free to e-mail questions to me at brianc@cbr.com).

This one is a weird one, because I know someone just asked me about this, but I can't seem to find their e-mail about it. Perhaps they Tweeted me about it? Or wrote to me on Facebook? Or maybe they DID e-mail me and I just can't find it (searching for "Wolverine" in my e-mails doesn't exactly narrow things down much, ya know?). In any event, someone wrote in to ask me if I could detail which comic book issues that Wolverine appeared in were actually appearances of a Skrull pretending to be Wolverine.

EDITED TO ADD: Found it!! Reader Jeremy sent the question to my bcronin@legendsrevealed.com e-mail, which is really just for Movie Legends Revealed, TV Legends Revealed, etc. stuff, but hey, I found it there, so it all worked out! Thanks for the question, Jeremy!

Sounds like a plan!

Okay, the storyline began in an arc in X-Men during Alan Davis' run in charge of both Uncanny X-Men and X-Men. The X-Men found themselves traveling through time and space to the Skrull homeworld right before Galactus devoured it. They were unable to change history and save the Skrulls, but at least they escaped before they were devoured, as well.

Kitty Pryde managed to get it so that they traveled back to our time, but actually right BEFORE they left. The heroes had a chance to save one of their friends, Joseph, from being killed by Magneto, but then something shorted out and everyone was knocked unconscious...

They remained out cold for over a week, which caught them up with their normal time...

However, what the X-Men did not know was that during that week that they were all unconscious, Apocalypse's agents came in and replaced Wolverine with a Skrull impostor of Wolverine. This was so that Apocalypse could then operate on Wolverine without the X-Men knowing that their teammate was missing. Apocalypse gave Wolverine his adamantium skeleton back and then brainwashed him into becoming Apocalypse's latest Horseman, Death!

So, back to the main question - which issues featuring "Wolverine" were actually the Skrull replacement?

Okay, obviously the next issues of Uncanny X-Men and X-Men, which were a crossover that introduced the new version of Warlock that was about to get his own ongoing series as part of a super-short-lived Marvel line of comics called "M-Tech," which included Warlock and Deathlok among the titles. Honestly, wouldn't that be a cool idea for a feature? To spotlight the various short-lived line of comics like "M-Tech?"

Then the next issue of Uncanny X-Men had the X-Men decide to break up for some fairly obscure reason. Skrullverine was along for that ride...

The direct aftermath of that decision was shown in X-Men #92, so Skrullverine is in there only to basically say goodbye along with the other X-Men who were cutting out...

The next few issues of Uncanny X-Men and X-Men then told stories featuring the various members of the team while they were out on their own. No Wolverine appearances, since he had his own title for that stuff.

Wolverine #140 was set before the "shattering," so it showed Wolverine and Nightcrawler hanging out...

It also had an awkward conversation between Wolverine and Xavier...

The next issue was post-"Shattering," and Wolverine hung out with Jubilee on a mission...

And she specifically noted that he was acting out of character...

The next two issues were straightforward team-ups with Alpha Flight...

Wolverine also made a brief appearance in Gambit #8, where we learn that someone has taken all of the adamantium out of Sabretooth...

Next, see how Skrull Wolverine was revealed!

Wolverine showed up at the end of Hulk #7...

And has a fight with Hulk in Hulk #8...

Note that the Hulk wrecks him pretty easily, crushing his bone claws...

That set-up for that Hulk fight was represented in Wolverine #144, which was being written by Erik Larsen, who also wrote the issue of Hulk with the fight in it...

Okay, so the X-Men were all broken up, right? However, a crisis popped up and Cyclops and Jean Grey had to throw together a ragtag team of X-Men to help save this group of super-powerful children known as the Mannites. Their weird team got its own miniseries and it consisted of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Cable, X-Man, Archangel and Wolverine...

They fought against Apocalypse's agent, Death, who they, of course, did not know was secretly the REAL Wolverine...

In the third and final issue, Skrullverine sacrifices himself to protect the Mannites and Jean Grey...

This leads to Uncanny X-Men #375, when Xavier and Beast do an autopsy on "Wolverine"...

They figure out pretty quickly that he is a Skrull, but since Xavier is a bit of a jerk, he then uses his powers to make the other X-Men all fight each other to the death in their minds, because that would root out any other possible Skrull agents, as if you die in your mind, you can't be a Skrull...for reasons.

He then reveals the truth of Wolverine's death to the others...

The next storyline, "The Twelve," pits the X-Men against Death and they find out he is the real Wolverine.

Skrullverine gets one last appearance in Wolverine #145, where we see the flashback/behind-the-scenes story of how Apocalypse kidnapped Wolverine and gave him his adamantium back...

So I count 17 appearances for Skrullverine. He replaced Wolverine in:

Wolverine #140-144 (plus part of #145)

X-Men #91-92

Uncanny X-Men #371-372, 375

Gambit #8

Hulk #7-8

Astonishing X-Men #1-3
