WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wolverine #10 by Benjamin Percy, Adam Kubert, Frank Martin, and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

In the latest issue of his titular comic, Wolverine and Maverick stood face-to-face with a room full of bad guys and an assortment of impressive weapons from throughout Marvel's history. This was at the Legacy House, where the wealthy gathered together to bid on rare superhuman paraphernalia.

Wolverine was undercover when he discovered one of his severed clawed hands up for auction alongside the amnesic mutant powerhouse known as Maverick. Once Logan's cover was blown, he managed to free Maverick from his brainwashing and the two former Team X members attempted to escape.

Wolverine the Phoenix Gun

Things went bad at first when the auctioneer fired one of Punisher's old guns and struck Maverick in the head. Fortunately, all this did was make Maverick even angrier and more clearheaded before the man claimed he also had one of Electra's daggers tucked away. As Wolverine and Maverick fought their way to freedom, they almost died horribly as the auctioneer had one more weapon he was ready to use against them. This was the Phoenix Gun, but he could not pull the trigger fast enough before an unlikely person saved the mutants: Delores Ramirez, a CIA agent working for the X-Desk.

The Phoenix Gun made its first appearance in 2010's Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #2 by Jason Aaron, Adam Kubert, Mark Morales, Justin Ponsor & Rob Steen. This was a strange time travel adventure where Wolverine and Spider-Man bounced around time, thanks mostly to the mechanisms of Mojoworld. When they ended up at what looked like the end of the world, the two were searched for a weapon powerful enough to stop what was coming.

Wolverine with Phoenix Gun

Spider-Man found the Phoenix Gun. Peter realized this gun could save them all but the person who fired it would die. This is why the auctioneer in Wolverine was lucky that Ramierez stopped him from firing the weapon. The Phoenix Gun has a bullet that has the power of the Phoenix Force, and this is a weapon that can blow up planets. Spider-Man had no idea who made this gun at the time, but he knew it could defeat their enemy here, which happened to be Doctor Doom, the Living Planet. Wolverine knew what the gun was, and he even called it "Jeannie." He then used it to kill Doom, making the ultimate sacrifice in the process.

However, the true power of the Phoenix gun was revealed, and Wolverine was resurrected, now merged with the Phoenix Force. The cosmic entity turned him into Dark Phoenix Wolverine, and he wanted to burn the world. Luckily, Spider-Man saved the world by talking Wolverine down. Unfortunately, the final issue of the series saw Beast working on a new project that was heavily implied to be the Phoenix Gun. The gun was never seen afterwards, but apparently Beast was successful in creating the weapon...and it somehow ended up in the wrong hands.
