Longtime X-Men villain Mister Sinister has come up with some twisted creations over his lifetime, but a new Wolverine/Nightcrawler amalgamation, among others, from the upcoming Sins of Sinister event might be the strangest yet. The writer of the tie-in series Nightcrawlers describes Sinister's living hybrid concoctions.

"Nightcrawlers is a chance to mash together countless weird and wonderful combination of mutant genes and send them out into a universe that just keeps getting more and more horrible," Nightcrawlers writer Si Spurrier tells SFX Magazine. The three-issue series spans from ten to one thousand years in the wake of some unknown machinations by Sinister drastically altering the future of the X-Men, and Marvel Universe, across the world and galaxy.

Leinil Francis Yu's cover to the series' first issue shows the Kurt Wagner/Wolverine "Wagnerine" mashup, replete with Wolverine's trademark mask and claws, but also Nightcrawler's recognizable two-fingered hands and traditional costume. Sinister's own diamond symbol also appears on the character's forehead. The shadowy visages of four other Nightcrawler-ish hybrids are seen in the background. Yu's cover for issue #2 features a hooded Colossus/Kurt combination holding a vanquished Thor, with another Nightcrawler creation in the foreground, wielding the Thunder God's hammer Mjolnir.

Nightcrawlers will replace Spurrier's Legion of X for three issues, and will be joined by Immoral X-Men and Storm and the Brotherhood of Mutants. Those titles replace Immortal X-Men and X-Men Red, respectively, for the same duration during the event. Those three series, preceded by Sins of Sinister #1 by Kieron Gillen and Lucas Werneck later this month and closing with Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 in April, will comprise the entire storyline.

The mysteries surrounding Sinister have been deepening in recent months. The character was recently revealed to be one of four -- if not more -- clones, seemingly unknowing of each other’s existence. While the Sinister clone known to the X-Men sits on Krakoa's governing Quiet Council, another was shown to be masquerading as Orchis' Doctor Stasis. This week's X-Men Red revealed yet another Sinister clone was secretly galactic weapons maker Orbis Stellaris.

Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, Mister Sinister has long been known for manipulating X-Men history, going back to the character's introduction. Sinister was first known for creating Madeline Pryor, clone of Jean Grey and mother to Nathan Summers, aka Cable. It was later revealed that Sinister played key roles in the formulative years of orphaned brothers Scott and Alex Summers, aka Cyclops and Havok.

Sins of Sinister #1 goes on sale January 25. Nightcrawlers #1, by Spurrier and Paco Medina, goes on sale February 15.
