WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wolverine #10 by Benjamin Percy, Adam Kubert, Frank Martin & VC's Cory Petit, on sale now

Most mutants who've been accepted by Krakoa have taken the opportunity to find new lives on the island nation, and they've tried to set aside their problems to work together for a common cause. But one of Wolverine's oldest allies just fought against that idea and set himself into a unique role in the process.

In Wolverine #10, Maverick just set himself up as the ultimate problem for Krakoa, with a seeming willingness to work against Krakoa if the money is right.

Wolverine Maverick 1

Maverick has been something of a wild card for years within the Marvel Universe. Although he's nominally a mutant -- albeit a depowered one -- Maverick has never been strictly an ally to the X-Men. If anything, he's more of a frenemy to his former Team X teammate, Wolverine. Still, he stands as someone who Logan can (occasionally) trust. Since the formation of Krakoa however, all mutants have been considered citizens of the island nation, even if they don't want to be. This also means any mutant's actions across the world can cause international incidents, such as Maverick and his work with his mercenary team. Despite all this, Wolverine tries to recruit Maverick to work with Krakoa and X-Force in particular.

Maverick isn't entirely interested. He sees Krakoa as something of a cult and firmly believes in himself and his new team of mercenaries, the Mercs. However, he does leave Logan with a standing off to join him and his Mercs at any time. Wolverine does think there's some hope for Maverick joining up with the X-Men though, offering him the same standing invitation to come back to Krakoa.

However, Logan doesn't know is that Maverick is also taking meetings with the CIA, specifically with Agent Ramirez of the X-Desk, the US Government's department monitoring Krakoa and the X-Men. Although the X-Desk has been helpful with Krakoa before, they're still wary of how the mutants operate. While having a meal with Maverick, Ramizerz asks him point-blank if he's decided where his loyalties lie, and the mercenary implies that he has, suggesting he's willing to work against Krakoa.

Maverick's status outside of Krakoa already made him one of the biggest mutant wild cards in the Marvel Universe right now. The fact that he seems to be content continuing to have that kind of freedom could end up setting up some serious conflict. Beast has approached the Mercs about working with Krakoa, which could rile up feathers with anti-mutant factions within the American government. Likewise, the discovery of Maverick working in opposition to mutant interests -- especially on American orders -- could set the X-Men up against the United States. With the world already turning against the mutants so much already, this could only exasperate a tense political space that the X-Men have found themselves in.

All of this positions Maverick as the biggest potential problem for the mutant nation to figure out. While he could take direct action against Krakoa, his black ops assassinations could also be attributed to mutantkind, even if he's not a Krakoan citizen yet. Alternatively, he could actually be playing a long-con against the government and be serving as the ultimate undercover X-Force agent.

Regardless of what side Maverick is really working with, this ambiguity opens up numerous possible cans of worms for the X-Men. There's a rogue mutant out in the world, and one with an expressed distaste for how Krakoa operates, which will likely spell disaster down the line.
