There's always been romantic drama at the heart of the X-Men franchise, with one of the most endearing elements of the superhero franchises being the interplay and tension between various couples. But in recent years, all those elements have fallen by the wayside, even for some of the franchises' most famous pairings.

The X-Men have codified the concept of a free-loving connection between Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and Wolverine, resolving one of the franchises' most enduring pieces of character drama. But as many other realities have hinted, Jean fully choosing Logan over Scott could push Cyclops down a dark path.

One of the most enduring soap opera elements of the X-Men franchise has been the conflict between Scott Summers, Jean Grey, and Logan. After becoming close during their tenure as founding X-Men, Cyclops and Marvel Girl's potential relationship was complicated by Logan's clear interest in Jean. While the pair have circled a romance and openly expressed their love for one another at various points, Jean's long-running romance with Scott kept it from ever fully forming in the core-Marvel Universe. This created all sorts of tensions between Cyclops and Wolverine, who'd butted heads frequently even before this. In more than a few possible futures, Jean ultimately chose Logan and in some, this was the final straw for Cyclops.

Earth-18119, the home of Spiderling, daughter of a happily married Peter and Mary-Jane Watson-Parker was also the home of Katherine Howlett. Kate, aka Shine, was the daughter of Wolverine and Jean Grey, who formally began a romance. Moving past Scott, Wolverine and Jean were loving parents to their daughter (who developed her own ability to generate blinding auras of light) and found peace as major staff members at the Xavier Institute. This left Scott increasingly cold to the teachings of Xavier, pushing him further away from the X-Men. In other worlds, like Earth-2182, home of Nightcrawler's alternate reality daughter Nocturne or Earth-94041, where she never ended up falling for Scott, the loss of Jean helped motivate Cyclops to completely splinter away from the X-Men and become a fixture of the Brotherhood instead.

It often appears that realities, where Cyclops didn't have the chance to be with Jean, result in him embracing his anger above all else. In past times, the open love triangle between him, Jean, and Logan would have likely stirred up drama, even potentially risking him going rogue. But the lingering remnants of Scott's relationship with Emma Frost (while not as prevelant as his romance with Jean) seem to keep Cyclops busy. If anything, Scott's romance with Emma has helped him move past his personal hang-ups with Jean and Logan and accept that someone can find love with more than one person. Despite Jean and Logan's open romantic (and frequently reciprocated) impulses, Scott and Jean have also remained firmly involved. they are often shown sharing a bed with one another.

But if Jean was to just choose Logan as her sole paramour, Cyclops has the potential to lash out in some dangerous ways. With a new iteration of the Brotherhood forming on Arakko around Storm, a falling out with Jean could be the perfect impetus for Cyclops to return to the wildcard status he gained in the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-Men. If Wolverine and Jean ever took things to another level, it could go very poorly for the leader of the X-Men.
