WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men Unlimited #5, available now on Marvel Unlimited.

Wolverine has found himself torn between his own innate drive towards violence and the deep sense of empathy that his lengthy life has taught him. Having lived through almost every breed of tragedy that a person can endure and killed more than a few innocent people himself, Logan has walked the fine line between man and monster almost his entire life, and this has allowed him to judge between those who deserved a second chance and those who are gone beyond redemption with a great deal of accuracy.

Whether he wants to or not, it's now up to Logan to pit his skills as a judge of character against one of his former students, Nature Girl. Having recently declared war on humanity and its pollution Lin Li has set herself down a path of carnage and destruction, and X-Men Unlimited #5 by Gerry Duggan, Emico Laiso, Rachele Rosenburg and VC's Joe Sabino makes it clear that Wolverine might be the only one who can help her get off of it.

X-Men Nature Girl

After Cyclops founded the mutant safe-haven of Utopia off the coast of San Francisco, Wolverine quickly found himself at odds with his long-time teammate over Cyclops' more militant approach to safeguarding mutantkind. Eventually, Wolverine and several other X-Men abandoned the island-nation and returned to the grounds of the abandoned Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Here, they founded a new school, the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, where they dedicated themselves to the then-deceased Charles Xaver's mission of educating young mutants and encouraging peaceful co-existence between humans and mutants.

Among the students of the Jean Grey School was Lin, whose mutant ability allows her to commune with nature itself. With this ability, Lin can speak to animals and plants, manipulate the weather, and perform minor acts of healing. As a result of her unique ability to understand the language of animals and plants, Lin has always been extremely sensitive to the environment and the damage that's been done to it by humanity. While she's been able to channel her frustration over the state of the planet into more healthy outlets before, the events of X-Men Unlimited #5 finally push her over the edge.

In this issue, Lin and a few mutants are hanging out on the beaches of the mutant nation Krakoa when they discover a dying sea turtle pulling itself onto the shore. Through her powers, a heartbroken Lin relates the sea turtle knows it's dying and simply doesn't want to die alone. As the turtle breathes its last breath, it coughs up a plastic bag from a convenience store in Las Vegas. Outraged by the senseless death, and those of the numerous other sea creatures who have met similar fates on Krakoa's shores, Lin sets out through one of the island's Gateways and confronts the store's manager face to face. His indifference to the turtle's death brings out all of Lin's pent-up fury, and she kills the manager by stabbing him in the neck with a pair of scissors.

Wolverine Unlimited

After escaping from the police by commanding all of the animals within Las Vegas to attack everyone in the city, Lin and Saoirse, a police dog that she's befriended, set off on their own. Learning about the situation, Xavier tasks Wolverine with capturing Lin before she can cause more damage to the United States and Krakoa's fragile standing with the international community. Given his experience as her teacher, it makes sense that Wolverine should be the one to convince Lin to return home and face judgment for her crimes. While Lin has broken one of the Krakoa's three major laws by killing someone, Wolverine's past has given him a deep understanding of killers that few other heroes in the world of Marvel possess.

Whether or not Nature Girl plans on continuing her campaign of destruction is unclear, but her actions demand justice under Krakoan law. While Logan might be able to talk Lin out of taking whatever plans she might have to the next level, the fate that awaits her back home might be set in stone.
