X-Men Legends #1 will include a new chapter in the iconic first meeting between Wolverine and the Hulk, written by the legendary Roy Thomas and drawn by Dave Wachter.

Among several new tales to be included in the issue will be a story that serves as an epilogue to the first clash between the Green Goliath and Weapon X. Taking place between the events of The Incredible Hulk #181 and Giant-Size X-Men #1, "Interim for Mutants Part 1" kicks off with an enraged Wolverine looking to resume his brawl with the Hulk after being knocked unconscious. Thinking Hulk left him for dead, Logan vows to make him wish he was dead and begins prowling the Quebec wilderness in search of him. When Wolverine finally does catch up to his quarry, he admits that he's already sick of the Hulk calling him "little man" before resuming their fight.

A Longtime Rivalry

Wolverine made his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #180 (1974), written by Len Wein, drawn by Herb Trimpe and decked out in his debut costume designed by John Romita Sr. After being sent by Department H to put an end to the destruction caused by the Hulk and the Wendigo, Wolverine initially takes no prisoners. However, he quickly realizes that his adamantium claws can scarcely pierce the Hulk's green flesh. Logan then adopts a different strategy and attacks the Wendigo instead, leading the child-like Hulk to assume Wolverine is his ally. After defeating the cannibalistic beast, Wolverine turns his attention back to the Hulk and gets back to doing what he does best. Unfortunately for Logan, the Hulk doesn't take kindly to the betrayal and knocks him out cold.

Wolverine reappeared a few months later in the pages of Giant-Size X-Men #1, where he gained his iconic mask thanks to artist Gil Kane. Here it was confirmed that Logan was a mutant and Professor X recruits him to join his new team of X-Men, which also included Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Sunfire, Banshee and Thunderbird. Wolverine and the Hulk would cross paths again several times in the following years, sometimes as allies (they even had a brief stint together as Fantastic Four members) and more often as adversaries. But the two also developed a mutual respect for one another, no doubt due to their many clashes and team-ups over the years.

X-Men Legends #1 hits shelves on Aug 10.
