Following Ryan Reynold's surprising announcement that Hugh Jackman will don the claws one last time as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, Marvel fans have come together to rally for Jackman to wear the character's iconic yellow costume in the upcoming threequel.

While Jackman has portrayed Logan/Wolverine since 2000's X-Men, he has never once worn the character's yellow costume on screen. The closest fans have gotten to see the costume in live-action was in a deleted scene from The Wolverine. James Mangold, who directed the 2013 film, explained the decision to keep Jackman's version out of the costume in 2020. "Everything about his character as I understand it, would keep him from donning a self promoting 'uniform,'" the director said in a reply to a fan on Twitter. "I'm sure the next incarnation of the Wolverine will go there."

Although Jackman initially received some backlash when cast as Weapon X in 1999, his version of the Marvel mutant ended up winning over both fans and critics. The actor returned to the role eight more times in the X-Men film series with his final performance as the character in 2017's Logan, which served as Jackman's swan song for the character until the recent Deadpool 3 casting. Star Ryan Reynolds has promised fans that Jackman's return as Wolverine will not tarnish or ruin the character's ending in Logan.

How Will Wolverine Factor Into Deadpool 3?

It is currently unknown how Wolverine will fit into the threequel's story. Reynolds previously revealed in 2021 that "before Disney bought Fox, Deadpool 3 was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real." Some fans have speculated that with Jackman's casting that storyline has been revived, but that remains unconfirmed at this time. Beyond Reynolds and Jackman, the only actor confirmed to appear in Deadpool 3 is Leslie Uggams, presumably reprising her role as Wade Wilson's roommate Blind Al.

Shawn Levy, who directed Jackman in 2012's Real Steel and Reynolds in 2021's Free Guy and 2022's The Adam Project, will helm Deadpool 3 from a script penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Reese and Wernick, who previously wrote the scripts for the first two Deadpool films, have described the Deadpool 3 script as a "comfy old sweater." The screenwriting duo has also praised Disney and Marvel Studios for allowing them to "maintain the tone and the vision" they have for the third film. Although fans initially feared Deadpool 3 would be rated PG-13, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has assured MCU fans that the Deadpool franchise will remain R-rated.

Deadpool 3 opens in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
